A Collective of Talent
At the heart of the National Academies is our network of extraordinary individuals who bring unparalleled knowledge, perspectives, and a steadfast commitment to serving the public good.

Each year, thousands of top experts in their fields — including the distinguished members elected to our Academies — volunteer their time and expertise to our projects.

We leverage a variety of formats to share knowledge and facilitate solutions, ranging from in-depth consensus studies to collaborative workshops. No matter the activity, we conduct our work in a manner that is based in scientific evidence and meets our standards of excellence, objectivity, and nonpartisanship.

A Pledge of Excellence

We offer a wide range of programmatic capabilities to share knowledge and facilitate solutions, ranging from in-depth consensus studies to collaborative workshops. No matter the activity, we conduct our work in a manner that is based in scientific evidence and meets our standards of excellence, objectivity, and nonpartisanship.

A Legacy of Trust

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine operate under a congressional charter signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, at the height of the Civil War, to advise the nation on issues related to science and technology. The legacy continues to this day, as the National Academies work together to address the most pressing challenges facing our nation and the world. The work of our private, nonprofit institution is grounded in the expertise of the membership elected to our three Academies and conducted through our major program centers and offices.
