The National Academy of Engineering announced today that Howard (“Howie”) B. Rosen will become its next executive officer, effective Aug. 24, 2026. Rosen was selected through an open search process that identified multiple well-qualified candidates for the role. He stood out for his outstanding contributions to engineering and his extensive leadership experience, including service to the Academy on its council and as home secretary. Gulf Research and the Legacy of Energy Infrastructure

Program News

It’s been nearly a year since the National Academies’ Gulf Research Program (GRP) visited the site of the well #59 blowout in Plaquemines Parish. Well #59, an abandoned oil well that was not permanently plugged, spilled 9,400 gallons of oil into the Mississippi River Delta in April of 2025. Following its visit, the GRP initiated an integrated effort to address the ongoing and complex challenges of legacy energy infrastructure in the Gulf region.

Statement

Recently the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and National Academy of Medicine each submitted public comments to the Federal Register to object to a June proposal by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) that would require research grant proposals to be reviewed by political appointees.  The public comments by each Academy reflect their unique perspectives while also expressing a shared concern that the OMB proposal would set back the pursuit of the types of discovery that have propelled the United States forward as a global leader in science, engineering, and medicine for many decades.

Eight Health Professionals Selected for RWJF Health Policy Fellows Program
