In an editorial appearing in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, former NAS president Marcia McNutt and Ellen Stofan, the Smithsonian Institution’s undersecretary for science and research, share a vision for the future of science. McNutt and Stofan recently co-hosted a symposium that celebrated the past 250 years of American science and explored opportunities for continued innovation and discovery. “Anniversaries are not just moments to celebrate the past; they are calls to envision the future,” they write.
