Description
Created in 2018, New Voices is an ongoing program that has engaged interdisciplinary, forward-looking cohorts of outstanding mid-career SEM leaders in the sciences, engineering, and medicine and/or demonstrated interest or experience in science communication, international scientific collaboration, and science policy. The program provides members with an opportunity to think collectively beyond their institutional and geographic boundaries to identify and address issues of pressing concern for the nation.
New Voices members are selected through a merit-based, open competition. Each cohort of approximately 20 members serves a two-year term before transitioning to active alumni status. Cohort members meet via Zoom each month and convene in person twice a year for a two-day meeting. Cohorts also produce webinars and other public events as part of their service, based on the availability of funds. They are supported by National Academies staff, with guidance from an Advisory Committee of senior experts dedicated to the New Voices mission.
The goals of the New Voices program are to:
- Enhance the National Academies' advice-making work and convening activities by engaging members to make committee nominations and serve in program activities where invited;
- Develop the capacity of mid-career leaders to serve their community and impact science policy discussions;
- Bring new ideas to National Academies' discussions through working group activities and biannual meetings;
- Connect a broad network of emerging U.S. leaders in the sciences, engineering, and medicine to combat public distrust by bringing science communication activities to new communities; and
- Promote international collaboration by maintaining a presence of U.S. young leaders at major international conferences.
