New Voices members appointed to Workshop Committee for Rethinking Researcher Assessment

Mitul Luhar (Cohort 2024-26), Emily Pentzer (Cohort 2024-26), and Eri Saikawa (Cohort 2024-26) were appointed to serve on the workshop committee for Rethinking Researcher Assessment and Incentives at U.S. Academic Institutions, a joint project between the Strategic Council for Research Excellence and New Voices. The committee will explore new approaches to expand the criteria for which researchers are assessed at U.S. academic institutions beyond traditional outputs such as grants, publications, and citation counts. The workshop will bring together professors, researchers, and administrators to explore effective strategies for implementing these changes at universities across the U.S. New Voices member Mitul Luhar will serve as the co-chair for the committee. New Voices members work with Hollywood screenwriters at Science and Entertainment Exchange Retreat

New Voices members Enrico Castillo (Cohort 2021-23) and Kiana Aran (Cohort 2024-26) participated in the 2025 Writers Retreat with the Science and Entertainment Exchange. The Science and Entertainment Exchange, a program of the National Academy of Sciences, connects the entertainment industry with experts in science, technology, and medicine in order to enhance the portrayal of science and scientists in film, television, and new media, and to make science more accessible and inspiring for all audiences.

New Voices member selected for NAM's Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine Program

New Voices member Enrico Castillo (Cohort 2021-23) was one of 10 selected members of the National Academy of Medicine's (NAM) 2025 class of Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine Scholars. This cohort of early- to mid-career professionals come from a wide range of health-related fields, including pediatrics, infectious diseases, psychiatry, and biomedical engineering. The NAM’s Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine (ELHM) program provides a platform for a new generation of leaders to collaborate with the NAM and its members to advance science, address persistent challenges in health and medicine, and spark transformative change to improve health for all.

New Voices members attend National Academy of Sciences 162nd Annual Meeting

On April 26, 2025, Monica Dus (Cohort 2024-26), Rachel Gallery (Cohort 2024-26), Mitul Luhar (Cohort 2024-26), Melanie Napier (Cohort 2024-26) and Emily Pentzer (Cohort 2024-26) attended the NAS Annual Meeting. The meeting was a gathering of NAS members, with an opening address by President Marcia McNutt and subsequent technical panel discussions. New Voices members met with National Academies leadership and members, and highlighted current and future activities.

New Voices Spring 2025 Member Meeting responds to current events and builds science communication skills

The spring 2025 New Voices meeting brought members together to explore emerging trends in STEM funding, applications of AI in research dissemination, and new avenues for cohort collaboration. Highlights included a dynamic science communication workshop led by editors from Issues in Science and Technology, career-focused lightning talks, and networking with Mirzayan Fellows. Participants also engaged in forward-looking discussions about the program’s future and project development.

Webinar: Funding Outside the Box - Non-Federal Paths for Junior Researchers

New Voices member Jessica Menold (Cohort 2024-26) organized a webinar in collaboration with other New Voices members on the topic of seeking alternative funding sources in a changing funding landscape. In this webinar, leaders in research across engineering, science, and medicine unpacked non-federal funding strategies. Panelists discussed their research careers and shared insights on soliciting and securing funding from non-traditional sources.

On this episode of "The Ongoing Transformation," a podcast from Issues in Science and Technology, host Jason Lloyd interviews Angel Desai (Cohort 2024-26), an infectious disease specialist and associate professor at the University of California Davis Medical Center. Desai and George R. Thompson III cowrote “Foiling the Growing Threat of Fungal Pathogens” in the Winter 2025 issue. Desai discusses what fungal pathogens are, why they are becoming more dangerous, and how the public health community can respond. Listen to the episode.

New Voices member attends Connections to Sustain Science in Latin America in Peru

On March 11-13, 2025, Mariel Lavieri (Cohort 2024-26) attended the Connections to Sustain Science in Latin America Symposium in Lima, Peru. The event brought together outstanding early/mid-career scientists, engineers, and medical professionals from across Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as the U.S. and Canada, to explore exciting advances and opportunities in their fields. This symposium aims to catalyze convergence research, innovation, and cross-pollination of ideas. Visit the event page.

New Voices members lead through the 3rd U.S.-Africa Frontiers Symposium

On February 18-20, 2025, New Voices members Hussam Mahmoud (Cohort 2021-23), Asmeret Berhe (2018-20), and Jamaji Nwanaji-Nwerem (Cohort 2024-26) attended the Third U.S.-Africa Frontiers of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Symposium in Kigali, Rwanda. The U.S.- Africa Frontiers program brings together outstanding young scientists, engineers, and medical professionals from the U.S. and the member countries of the African Union for a series of symposia to discuss exciting advances and opportunities in their fields. Hussam served as a co-chair for the symposium and Asmeret co-chaired a session focused on decarbonization. Visit the event page.

New Voices present research at Y-KAST Sustainability Conference in Korea

From February 12-14, 2025, Rachel Gallery (Cohort 2024-26) and Ying Zhang (Cohort 2024-26) attended the International Conference on Breakthroughs for a Sustainable Future in Busan, Korea, hosted by The Young Korean Academy of Science and Technology (Y-KAST). Rachel presented "Soil Ecology for Biodiversity Conservation" in the Basic Science Forum and participated in a mentoring panel on graduate student professional development. Ying presented "Top-Down Network Management at Scale" in the Applied Science Forum. Both engaged in networking with representatives from other Young Academies, including the Global Young Academy.

New Voices at Nature-Based Solutions Forum

On February 4-5, 2025, Mitul Luhar (Cohort 2024-26) attended the National Practice Forum for Nature-Based Solutions, hosted by the National Academies, the Network for Engineering With Nature (N-EWN), and the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) Center for Coastal Climate Resilience. Mitul presented his research on using nature-based solutions to revitalize the Los Angeles River, emphasizing both the technical aspects and the importance of co-design with project partners and community members. New Voices member attends Precision Medicine Workshop in Kuwait

On Feb 2-3, 2025, Mariel Lavieri (Cohort 2024-26) attended a workshop on Precision Medicine: Promoting Knowledge Exchange and Collaboration between Kuwait and the United States. This workshop promoted knowledge exchange between the U.S. and Kuwait on recent advancements in the field of precision medicine and explored advancements in point-of-care technologies in both countries. Workshop participants discussed the unprecedented impact of artificial intelligence on the evolving landscape of precision medicine in the U.S. and Kuwait. Workshop discussions also highlighted how precision health research is revolutionizing the understanding and treatment of chronic diseases, like diabetes, which are prevalent in both countries. New Voice members appointed to committee for On Being a Scientist

Mitul Luhar (Cohort 2024-26) and Emily Pentzer (Cohort 2024-26) were appointed to the committee for a consensus study On Being a Scientist: An Updated and Online Guide to the Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research. This committee will produce a revised, expanded, and online version of "On Being a Scientist," which serves as an introductory guide for graduate students and early-career researchers. Existing content will be updated to align with current best practices, and new material will be added to reflect changes in the current national and international research practices and to address professional conduct that limits or harms research talent and research advancement. New Voices attended the International Science Council General Assembly in Oman

On January 26-30 2025, Jim Yoon (Cohort 2024-26) and Hussam Mahmoud (Cohort 2021-23) represented New Voices at the Muscat Global Knowledge Dialogue and Third International Science Council General Assembly in Oman. The Muscat Dialogue, the public portion of the event, covered topics such as international science collaboration, science diplomacy, and education. Attended by roughly 400 attendees, including leaders from major scientific unions and national academies, Jim and Hussam participated in sessions focused on early- and mid-career researchers (EMCRs), helping to build connections with peer organizations and advocate for a unified EMCR voice within ISC activities.

Foiling the Growing Threat of Fungal Pathogens

Angel Desai (New Voices Cohort 2024-26) co-authored an article, “Foiling the Growing Threat of Fungal Pathogens” (Issues in Science and Technology, 2025). The article discusses what fungal pathogens are, why they are becoming more dangerous, and how the public health community can respond. Read the article.

New Voices member elected to ISC Governing Board

The International Science Council has elected New Voices member Frances Colón (2018-20) to serve on its governing board, one of the key decision-making bodies of the International Science Council, providing scientific and strategic leadership to oversee the achievement of the Council’s vision, mission, principles and values, and to secure the financial and management robustness of the Council.
