Leveraging the National Climate Assessment to Empower Communities - A Workshop

Recently completed

A committee-supported project or activity that has been completed and for which output dissemination has begun. Its committee has been disbanded and closeout procedures are underway.

The goal for this workshop is to contribute towards the ongoing efforts to broaden the reach of the National Climate Assessment (NCA) to enhance its impact at local and regional levels. The workshop will highlight tangible examples of community engagement at various steps of the NCA development and dissemination process.

The concept for this workshop was initiated by members of the New Voices in Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine program.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a 1-day workshop to contribute to the ongoing effort to broaden the reach of the National Climate Assessment (NCA), with focus on community engagement through non-traditional methods of communication to enhance the impact and application of the report findings at local and regional levels. The workshop will engage diverse voices of previously under-represented stakeholders who have recently been brought into the NCA development process. Workshop participants will also share tangible examples of how the findings of the NCA are effectively being communicated and applied at the local level to benefit climate vulnerable communities. The intent of the workshop is to provide useful information and approaches to supplement the planning and development of the NCA6 and to enhance and streamline current inclusion efforts. A rapporteur-authored proceedings-in brief will be published summarizing the workshop.
