Emily Pentzer

Emily Pentzer is an Associate Professor in Chemistry and Materials Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University. She received a BS from Butler University (Chemistry, 2005) and PhD from Northwestern University (Chemistry, 2010). She then completed postdoctoral work in the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, before starting her independent career at Case Western Reserve University in 2013 and moving to Texas A&M in 2019. The Pentzer Lab's research centers on developing new polymeric materials and assemblies to understand structure-property-application relationships and access functions not possible with current state-of-the-art systems. Her group works on the encapsulation of "active" liquids and gases, designing and synthesizing new polymer chemistries, and developing feedstocks for additive manufacturing to produce multifunctional materials. Dr. Pentzer regularly participates in events aimed at the professional development of students and post-docs and facilitating their transition to vibrant STEM careers. She has received the NSF CAREER award (2016), PMSE Young Investigator Award (2017), CWRU Faculty Diversity Excellence Award (2019), ACS WCC Rising Star Award (2021), Journal of Polymer Science Innovation Award (2023); she was named a Texas A&M Presidential Impact Fellow (2021) and finalist for the Blavatnik Award in Physical Sciences and Engineering (2022). Dexter Memorial Lecture award, and the Air Force summer faculty fellowship award. Kaitlyn Sadtler

Dr. Kaitlyn Sadtler is a scientist and Chief of the Section on Immuno-Engineering at the National Institutes of Health. She began her lab at the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering after a postdoctoral fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Department of Chemical Engineering working on the molecular mechanisms of immune activation in the foreign body response. Her research has been published in journals such as Science, Nature Methods, Nature Communications, Nature Materials, and Science Translational Medicine. Dr. Sadtler was selected for the Forbes 30 Under 30 List in Science, the MIT Technology Review 35 Innovators Under 35, and the World Economic Forum Young Global Leaders. She also received an Outstanding Recent Graduate Award from Johns Hopkins University and an honorary doctorate from her undergraduate university, University of Maryland, Baltimore County. At NIH, Dr. Sadtler has lent her lab's expertise to the fight against COVID-19, leading a study that detected 16.8 million undiagnosed SARS-CoV-2 infections in the US after the first pandemic wave in the US. She continues her work on immune-engineering in the context of traumatic injury focusing on the balance of tolerance and autoimmunity during tissue reconstruction, recently implicating a new immune cell type in self-tolerance after volumetric muscle loss.

Dr. Karma Sawyer is the Director of the Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings (EI&B) Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Prior to joining PNNL, Dr. Sawyer served as the Program Manager for Emerging Technologies in the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Building Technologies Office. Under her leadership, the Program’s activities are projected to avoid an estimated 315 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions and cut building energy costs by some $94 billion through 2035. From 2010-2013, she served as Assistant Program Director and Fellow at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), focusing on carbon capture and thermal storage technologies. Dr. Sawyer earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 2008 and a B.S. in Chemistry from Syracuse University in 2003. She was a named a AAAS and ARPA-E fellow in 2010 and Distinguished Gilbreth Speaker of the National Academy of Engineering in 2023. Mahdieh Aghazadeh was born and raised in Qazvin, Iran and moved to the nation's capital to receive her first degree in chemical engineering from Sharif University of Technology. Multiple socio-economic issues encouraged Mahdieh to pursue graduate degrees (Chemical Engineering master's at University of Maine in 2011 and Biological Engineering PhD from Purdue University in 2016) in the USA; during which she has been involved in SWE, NASBE, and SHPE. Immediately after graduation she entered the private sector as a scientist at Johnson and Johnson's orthopaedic company R&D department. Since then, she has taken multiple roles within JnJ. She has worked with compliance and quality teams to enhance customers' experience with drug delivery devices and most recently joined Janssen Supply Chain team as a principal process engineer. Working at a heavily regulated industry, in addition to her graduate school research in biofuel production, clarified the importance of global scale collaboration. Mahdieh has initiated many technical collaborations within different sectors of JnJ as well as external innovators and academia. Advocating for multi-functional collaborations and partnerships for sustainability in biopharmaceutical production, new technology development, data collection and analysis, customer experience improvements, community outreach and education, and eventually promoting workplace inclusion and equity have become the primary goals of her career.

Among others, Dr. Lavieri has created dynamic programming, stochastic control, and continuous, partially observable state space models to guide screening, monitoring, and treatment decisions of chronic disease patients. During her tenure, she has worked to strengthen the sustainability of the CLPPP in its growth from a single multi-year, $2.7 million federal grant to three multi-year initiatives totaling nearly $158 million. Melanie's skills in grant-writing, drafting legislative rules, and contract administration were pivotal in securing the $150 million American Rescue Plan Act-funded Lead and Asbestos Remediation in School and Child Care Facilities project and the $4.2 million EPA-funded Voluntary School and Child Care Lead Testing and Reduction Grant Program. Her professional efforts have contributed to several publications and awards, including the Mutual of America Community Partnership Award and Harvard Roy Family Award for Environmental Partnership, in recognition of the partnership to develop the Clean Water for Carolina Kids program which used community scientists to test for lead in water at almost all child care centers during the pandemic. He is also a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Energy Policy Committee. Dr. Martin is a Fellow of the ASME and an Associate Fellow of the AIAA. Dr. Martin received a PhD in Aerospace Engineering, an MA in Asian Studies, and an MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Dr. Martin also holds an MS in Science and Technology Studies from Virginia Tech and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida.

Dr. Mitul Luhar is Associate Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical and Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC). His primary expertise is in fluid mechanics, and his research addresses hydrodynamic and aerodynamic design, soft robotics, environmental science, and coastal engineering. Mitul has worked on the development of functional materials and surfaces that can passively control fluid flows, the restoration of river systems, and the evaluation of nature-based defenses against coastal hazards. Before joining USC, Mitul was a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories at Caltech. He earned his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from MIT where he was awarded the Presidential Fellowship and the Martin Family Society Fellowship for Sustainability. He earned B.A. and M.Eng. degrees from the University of Cambridge. Mitul has received the AFOSR Young Investigator Program award, the NSF CAREER award, and is a member of the Frontiers of Engineering community at the National Academy of Engineering. Mitul is the inaugural holder of the Henry Salvatori Early Career Chair in Engineering at USC.

Monica Dus

Monica Dus is a tenured molecular biology and neuroscience professor at the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. She leads a research laboratory that studies the interplay between food, genes, and brain function, teaches undergraduate students, and is actively involved in public engagement and science communication. This year, she is on leave from her academic position to participate in the White House Fellowship program. Her scholarly and science communication work in nutrigenomics and neuroscience has been published in the top scientific journals and recognized with grants and awards, such as the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Sloan Research Fellowship, the NIH New Innovator Award, the NSF CAREER Award, the Ajimonoto Award in Gustation, the Rita Allen Foundation Scholars, and the Brain and Behavior New Investigator Award. Dr. Dus is a passionate teacher and science communicator. She teaches neuroscience and genetics to hundreds of undergraduates, and has contributed to museum workshops and exhibits, published SugarBuzz, a children’s comic book about food, hosted her own science podcasts (How to Science and Neuroepic), written for The Conversation, and participated in documentaries, radios shows, and podcasts. She holds a Ph. D. in molecular biology from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and a post-doctorate in neurobiology from New York University.

Dr. Rachel E. Gallery is the Thomas E. Lovejoy Endowed Chair in Biodiversity, Conservation Science, and Policy and a Professor of Microbial Ecology in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of Arizona. With an emphasis on enhancing equity and inclusion in STEM, Rachel builds opportunities to support global biodiversity conservation. Her research focuses on the ecology and conservation of soils and on sustaining ecosystem resilience in the face of wildfires, droughts, species invasions, and climate change. Rachel holds a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and a B.S. in Biology from American University. A former Research Fellow of Wolfson College and Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Oxford, she was also a Staff Scientist at the National Ecological Observatory Network before joining the University of Arizona faculty. A Fulbright Scholar and a former fellow and current member of the American Association of University Women, Rachel serves on nonprofit advisory boards, international working groups, and proposal review panels and regularly speaks at local outreach events and international conferences.

Sabrina Assoumou

Associate Professor and Inaugural Louis W. Sullivan, MD, Endowed Professor of Medicine, Boston University, Boston Medical Center

Sabrina A. Assoumou, MD, MPH, is a physician-scientist and the inaugural Louis W. Sullivan, MD, Professor of Medicine at Boston University. She is also an infectious diseases physician at Boston Medical Center. Dr. Assoumou is a thought leader in research focused on infectious complications of substance use including HIV and hepatitis C. Her research uses health economics to inform guidance panels on the best approach to improve the uptake and implementation of evidence-based interventions. She also develops and implements interventions. Her research has been published in leading journals such as JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Clinical Infectious Diseases. Her findings have also informed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Infectious Diseases Society of America's guidance panels. Her current research on HIV prevention is funded by the National Institutes of Drug Abuse. Dr. Assoumou graduated magna cum laude from Williams College and obtained her medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She then completed a combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency at Brown University and an Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Harvard University's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She has received research honors that include Boston University's Evans Junior Faculty Research Merit and Evans Investment awards and the Massachusetts Infectious Disease Society's Finland Award for Research Excellence as well as teaching awards including Boston Medical Center's Excellence in Teaching Hospital-Based Faculty Award. Dr. Assoumou is also a recipient of an Extraordinary Women Advancing Healthcare in Massachusetts Award by The Women's Edge.

Stephanie Diem

Assistant Professor in the Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics, the University of Wisconsin-Madison

Dr. Stephanie Diem is an Assistant Professor in the Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where her experimental plasma physics research focuses on using microwaves to heat and drive current in magnetically confined, high temperature plasmas for fusion energy development. Dr. Diem is the Primary Investigator of the Pegasus-III Experiment, a new fusion experiment funded by the US Department of Energy studying innovative plasma startup techniques in an effort to reduce the cost and complexity of future fusion power plants. Diem was selected by the U.S. Department of State to serve as a 2024 U.S. Science Envoy. She is the recipient of the 2023 Excellence in Fusion Engineering from the Fusion Power Associates and was an invited speaker at the 2022 White House Summit: Developing a Bold Decadal Vision for Commercial Fusion Energy. Prior to joining the faculty at UW-Madison, she was a Staff Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory on long-term assignment at the DIII- D National Fusion Facility in San Diego, CA. As a member of the 2021 New Voices in Science, Engineering, and Medicine cohort she served as Co-Chair and Communications Chair. Some of her New Voices activities have included: coauthor JEE article engineering education, New Voices One Health Webinar Series and she has worked on several projects through the NAS Science & Entertainment Exchange. Prior to New Voices, she was one of the organizers of the Early Career Fusion Scientists (ECFS) forum, a grassroots organization which initiated discussions and polling among the early career community to provide input to the National Academies Committee on a Strategic Plan for U.S. Burning Plasma Research. Diem received her B.S. in Nuclear Engineering at UW-Madison and her Ph.D. in Astrophysical Sciences from Princeton University.

Dr. Gurkan holds BS degrees in Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering from the Middle East Technical University in Turkey and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Purdue University. He completed his postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School and Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology. Dr. Gurkan's research is on global equitable access to diagnostics and personalized health. Dr. Gurkan has authored over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles. Dr. Gurkan's inventions have led to 13+ issued US patents and four successful biotechnology companies to date with products in global markets. Dr. Gurkan's innovations won numerous awards, including USPTO Patents for Humanity recognition and USFDA Breakthrough Device Designation. His honors include National Science Foundation CAREER Award, Translational Research Featured New Investigator Award, MIT Technology Review Innovator under 35 Award, the Doris Duke Innovations in Clinical Research Award. Dr. Gurkan is a member of the Global Gene Therapy Initiative, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Biomedical Engineering Society, and American Society of Hematology. Dr. Gurkan is a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), a member of the New Voices in Science, Engineering and Medicine Program by the National Academies, and a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Members of the New Voices program of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a 1-day public symposium to examine cross-disciplinary, cross-sectoral strategies to strengthen U.S. STEM workforce readiness in the face of rapid technological change. Rather than restating existing challenges, the symposium will focus on successful models, case studies, and lessons learned from past and present efforts to align education and training systems with national priorities.

In addition to preparing the future workforce, the discussions will emphasize strategies for reskilling and upskilling the current workforce, accelerating training pipelines, and ensuring workers can adapt quickly to advances in emerging technology areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnologies, and semiconductors. The symposium will highlight approaches that have supported adaptability, collaboration, and innovation at scale, with attention to how STEM workforce development underpins U.S. economic resilience, national security, and global scientific leadership.

Bernard Amadei

Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering, University of Colorado Boulder
Dr. Amadei is Distinguished Professor and Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He received his PhD in 1982 from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Amadei is the Founding Director of the Mortenson Center in Engineering for Developing Communities. He is also the Founding President of Engineers Without Borders - USA and the co-founder of the Engineers Without Borders-International network. Among other distinctions, Dr. Amadei is the 2007 co-recipient of the Heinz Award for the Environment; the recipient of the 2008 ENR Award of Excellence; the recipient of the 2015 Washington and ASCE OPAL awards; the recipient of the 2016 C. H. Dunn Award of the Construction Industry Institute; an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Construction; and an elected Senior Ashoka Fellow. He holds seven honorary doctoral degrees (UMass Lowell; Carroll College; Clarkson; Drexel; SUNY-ESF; Worcester Polytechnic Institute; and Technion in Israel). In 2013 and 2014, Dr. Amadei served as a Science Envoy to Pakistan and Nepal for the U.S. Department of State. Dr. Amadei holds a commercial pilot license (multi-engine land, instrument).

Nadine N. Aubry

Professor, Tufts University
Nadine Aubry is a professor of the School of Engineering and the past Provost at Tufts University, and the George and Virginia Bugliarello International Secretary of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). She has made numerous contributions to the field of fluid dynamics, particularly the reduced modeling of turbulence and other flows and novel solutions to microfluidics. Dr. Aubry was elected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAA&S), the American Academy of Mechanics (AAM) and the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and as an international member of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng), and as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). She was awarded the AIAA Fluid Dynamics Award, the ASME Fluids Engineering Award and the G.I. Taylor Medal of the Society of Engineering Science (SES), and served as Chair of the Division of Fluid Dynamics (DFD) of APS, President of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) and Chair of the National Academies’ U.S. National Committee for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNC/TAM). Prior to joining Tufts, she held various academic positions including as University Distinguished Professor and Dean of the College of Engineering at Northeastern University and as the Raymond J. Lane Distinguished Professor, University Professor and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University.

Gilda A. Barabino

Chair, AAAS Board of Directors
Gilda A. Barabino is President of Olin College of Engineering. Previously, she served as the Daniel and Frances Berg Professor and Dean of Engineering at The City College of New York’s (CCNY) Grove School of Engineering. Prior to joining CCNY, she served as Associate Chair for Graduate Studies and Professor in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory. At Georgia Tech she also served as the inaugural Vice Provost for Academic Diversity. Prior to Georgia Tech and Emory, she rose to the rank of Full Professor of Chemical Engineering and served as Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at Northeastern University. She is a noted investigator in the areas of sickle cell disease, cellular and tissue engineering, and the role of race/ethnicity and gender in science and engineering. Her many honors include an honorary degree from Xavier University of Louisiana and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring, and she is a Fellow of several scientific societies. Dr. Barabino is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She chairs the National Academies Committee on Women in Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and is the President-elect of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Joel P. Baumgart

Associate Vice Provost, Emory University
Dr. Joel P. Baumgart is the Associate Vice Provost at Emory University and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at Cornell University Weill Medical College. Joel was a U.S. Fulbright Scholar in Tanzania in 2015-16. Before his time abroad, Joel was an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science & Technology Policy Fellow in the Office of the Director at the National Institutes of Health and a Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Fellow at the National Academy of Engineering. In addition to his policy experience, Joel is a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology and was selected to the inaugural class of the New Voices at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. He was the recipient of the Eric W. Lothman Award for Outstanding Achievement in Neuroscience, the Award for Excellence in Scholarship in the Sciences & Engineering, and the Early Achievement Alumni Award from the University of Virginia, the Dr. Louis B. Fink Capstone Award from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Zora Neale Hurston Thesis Award for the Social Sciences from Columbia University. Dr. Baumgart has recently been awarded the MacVittie Emerging Leader Award from the American Association of University Administrators and was inducted into the Bouchet Society at Cornell University in 2012.

HILDEBRAND (NAS), originally trained in chemistry, biology and biochemistry, is a neuroethologist whose research focuses on the neural mechanisms and behavioral roles of olfaction in insects including agricultural pests and disease vectors. Dr. Hildebrand has received many honors and awards, including election to the German National Academy of Sciences ‘Leopoldina’ (1998), Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (1999), American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2001), U.S. National Academy of Sciences (2007), Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters Academy (2011), American Philosophical Society (2014), Brazilian Academy of Sciences (2019), and The World Academy of Sciences (2022). Following earlier faculty appointments at Harvard and Columbia Universities, he joined the University of Arizona in Tucson in 1985 as the founding head of its Department of Neuroscience. He currently is Regents Professor Emeritus of Neuroscience. Colleagues cite Dr. Hildebrand for his advocacy for general education in STEM and for access to and success in scientific careers for women and minorities, in addition to his work in neuroscience. He has been International Secretary of the NAS since 2014.

Jorge A. Huete-Pérez

Teaching Professor, Georgetown University
Dr. Jorge A. Huete-Pérez is one of Central America's top scholars in the biotechnology area and a highly regarded member of the scientific community internationally. He is currently a teaching professor at the Science, Technology and International Affairs Program (STIA) at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. He has more than two decades of experience working on science and technology policy with a focus on Latin America. In 2009 Dr. Huete, along with a select group of scientists, organized the Academy of Sciences of Nicaragua, becoming its founding president. In 2014, Dr. Huete was named Senior Vice President of Research and Social Outreach at the University of Central America, a position he still holds.

Dr. Huete has worked for a number of non-governmental organizations and international development agencies. Throughout the past three decades he has been a member of numerous international scientific organizations, including the Global Young Academy, the Executive Board of the Inter-American Network of Academies of Science, IANAS, and the V Regional Committee of the PEW Latin American Fellows Program in Biomedical Sciences. As an outspoken advocate for improving science education and the appropriate use of biotechnology for development, Dr. Huete has played a leading role in promoting international cooperation in STI in Central America.

Biotech research carried out in Dr. Huete’s lab has included molecular parasitology and microbiology, agricultural pathogens, forensic DNA typing, bioprospecting for industrial enzymes and the impact of development on the environment. His current work at Georgetown examines the state of STI policy development in Central America and investigates programs that promote the growth of bio-economy industries in the region. Dr. Huete is fluent in Spanish, English, Russian and Portuguese.

Neil Jacobstein

Chair of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Track, Singularity University
Neil Jacobstein is the Chair of the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Track at Singularity University. He is a founding Singularity Expert, and past President of Singularity. Jacobstein is a MediaX Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Stanford University, where his work since 2007 focuses on augmented decision systems. He is actively involved in applying AI to practical business problems. He was CEO of Teknowledge Corp, a pioneering AI company that did successful AI application work but was too early for the mass adoption we see today. Neil has practical and strategic AI/ML system building and technical R&D consulting experience with a long list of industrial and governmental partners, including: Deloitte, E&Y, PWC, Boeing, GM, Ford, BMW, GE, Applied Materials, Texas Medical Center, NASA, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, National Science Foundation, NIH, EPA, DOE, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, GM, Ford, Boeing, Applied Materials, Xero, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and more.

Patricia Silveyra

Associate Professor, Indiana University
Dr. Patricia Silveyra is the Anthony D. Pantaleoni Eminent Scholar, Associate Professor, and Chair of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at Indiana University Bloomington School of Public Health. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, and her PhD in Biochemistry, from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina and did her postdoctoral training as a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar at Penn State College of Medicine. In 2013, she established her research program as an Assistant Professor, and between 2015-2016, she served as the Director for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Education at Penn State College of Medicine. From 2018-2020, she led the Biobehavioral Laboratory at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and in 2021, she joined Indiana University Bloomington. Dr. Silveyra has served in various national organizations and committees committed to increase representation of women and minorities in STEM, including the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), where she was board member and Treasurer. She was part of the first cohort of the New Voices program, and she served in the NASEM Board on Higher Education and Workforce (BHEW). Dr. Silveyra has received numerous awards for her research accomplishments, her mentoring of underrepresented and international trainees, and her efforts to promote diversity in STEM at the local, national, and international level.

Gregory Weiss

Professor, University of California Irvine
Gregory Weiss, a tenured Professor and Vice Chair of Chemistry has 23 years of experience running a laboratory at UCI, where he teaches a course on “The Craft of Science” to new graduate and undergraduate students. Co-founder of four biotechnology and technology companies (including PhageTech and Debut Biotechnology), he was named UCI’s Entrepreneurial Leader of the Year in 2018 and a Faculty Innovation Fellow in 2019. He is an AAAS Fellow and has received an award from UCI’s School of Biological Sciences for mentoring junior faculty. His postdoctoral training took place at Genentech, which illustrates his interest in both academic and industrial research laboratories. He was selected by the US NAS as a representative to the “Annual Meeting of New Champions,” World Economic Forum meetings in Dalian and Tianjin, China, and also served on a committee examining dual-use issues for a joint US NAS / AAAS committee (“Responsible Bioscience for a Safe and Secure Society,” 2010-2011).

The Board on Higher Education and Workforce will host an open session featuring members of the New Voices in Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine program, which engages mid-career scientists, engineers, and health professionals to expand the diversity of expertise engaged in the National Academies’ work. The session will focus on the experience of graduate students while in school and how their mentors and institutions can successfully foster their professional development. Panelists will draw from their academic experiences in U.S. and international institutions as well as their professional interactions with graduate students and postdocs. This is one of two conversations with New Voices members intended to provide deeper insight into current hurdles that graduate students and postdocs face to prepare for and land into their own successful careers.

The 2024 Global Young Academy's International Conference of Young Scientists will take place in Washington, D.C. at the U.S. National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) from May 8-9, 2024. This year’s conference theme is, “Transformative and Inclusive Science for a Sustainable Future,” which will rethink and explore how recent technological advances and current efforts toward diverse and inclusive science can create a sustainable future for all. The conference will convene 150+ young scientists from more than 70 countries to engage with U.S.-based experts and STEM leaders working to ensure that the prosperity and well-being of communities is founded on transformative science and capable of addressing current and future complex challenges societies face.

The conference is sponsored by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the National Academy of Sciences Kobelt Fund. Furthermore, the conference will be supported by a Local Organizing Committee comprising members of the National Academies’ New Voices in Science, Engineering, and Medicine program, and supporting National Academies staff.

Registration is open to the public for virtual and in-person attendees, please use the registration button at the top of the page. In collaboration with Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable (GUIRR) staff, New Voices cohort members will host a panel discussion to bring fresh perspectives on overcoming innovation barriers across sectors. In this session, expert panelists will discuss their unique experiences navigating commercialization and the systems that enable or hinder progress in the science and tech entrepreneurship spaces. Cultural barriers, access to resources, resistance to change, and inadequate incentives are some of the hurdles innovators may encounter. This webinar explores approaches to use scientific and engineering tools in ways that center these human considerations in energy, health, and climate change research and systems development. To equitably mitigate and adapt to climate change, scientists and policymakers will need to measure and understand climate impacts such as physical infrastructure damage and public health outcomes with particular concern about disproportionate effects on disadvantaged and vulnerable communities, and simultaneously develop strategies to provide equitable and affordable energy access for historically excluded populations. This webinar will examine the tools and interdisciplinary approaches needed to characterize these impacts and develop solutions that help reverse historic inequities. The panel will begin by examining how combining socio-physical models of infrastructure with understanding of changing physical hazards such as extreme heat, wildfires, and hurricanes can enable building resilient communities. The presenters will then discuss how tools from data science to predict the civic and societal processes to drive environmental related policies can complement these models. The panel will conclude by considering cross-cutting challenges in including energy equity and environmental justice in these analyses, while seeking to address concerns about the use of data and identifying “knowledge gaps” that may prevent effective use of this data.
Imagining, planning for, and building sustainable futures will require new approaches to understanding how existing sociotechnical systems and climate-related disasters lead to disproportionate impacts on marginalized communities in the US, and how issues of equity and justice can help guide climate and energy-focused scientific and engineering research and development. The spring 2025 New Voices meeting brought members together to explore emerging trends in STEM funding, applications of AI in research dissemination, and new avenues for cohort collaboration. Highlights included a dynamic science communication workshop led by editors from Issues in Science and Technology, career-focused lightning talks, and networking with Mirzayan Fellows. Participants also engaged in forward-looking discussions about the program’s future and project development.

New Voices members appointed to Workshop Committee for Rethinking Researcher Assessment

Mitul Luhar (Cohort 2024-26), Emily Pentzer (Cohort 2024-26), and Eri Saikawa (Cohort 2024-26) were appointed to serve on the workshop committee for Rethinking Researcher Assessment and Incentives at U.S. Academic Institutions, a joint project between the Strategic Council for Research Excellence and New Voices. The committee will explore new approaches to expand the criteria for which researchers are assessed at U.S. academic institutions beyond traditional outputs such as grants, publications, and citation counts. The workshop will bring together professors, researchers, and administrators to explore effective strategies for implementing these changes at universities across the U.S. New Voices member Mitul Luhar will serve as the co-chair for the committee. New Voices members work with Hollywood screenwriters at Science and Entertainment Exchange Retreat

New Voices members Enrico Castillo (Cohort 2021-23) and Kiana Aran (Cohort 2024-26) participated in the 2025 Writers Retreat with the Science and Entertainment Exchange. The Science and Entertainment Exchange, a program of the National Academy of Sciences, connects the entertainment industry with experts in science, technology, and medicine in order to enhance the portrayal of science and scientists in film, television, and new media, and to make science more accessible and inspiring for all audiences.

New Voices member selected for NAM's Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine Program

New Voices member Enrico Castillo (Cohort 2021-23) was one of 10 selected members of the National Academy of Medicine's (NAM) 2025 class of Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine Scholars. This cohort of early- to mid-career professionals come from a wide range of health-related fields, including pediatrics, infectious diseases, psychiatry, and biomedical engineering. The NAM’s Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine (ELHM) program provides a platform for a new generation of leaders to collaborate with the NAM and its members to advance science, address persistent challenges in health and medicine, and spark transformative change to improve health for all.

New Voices members attend National Academy of Sciences 162nd Annual Meeting

On April 26, 2025, Monica Dus (Cohort 2024-26), Rachel Gallery (Cohort 2024-26), Mitul Luhar (Cohort 2024-26), Melanie Napier (Cohort 2024-26) and Emily Pentzer (Cohort 2024-26) attended the NAS Annual Meeting. The meeting was a gathering of NAS members, with an opening address by President Marcia McNutt and subsequent technical panel discussions. New Voices members met with National Academies leadership and members, and highlighted current and future activities.
