The 2024 United States – European Union Transportation Research Symposium is entitled Global Pathways to Net-Zero: Social, Behavioral, and Technological Research and Innovation Strategies for Transportation Decarbonization.

This event is the 7th in a series of symposia sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) and European Commission (EC) in partnership with the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies. The symposia bring together leading researchers, practitioners, and subject matter experts from the U.S. and Europe to identify and discuss critical transportation issues and challenges. The discussions are intended to surface shared research needs and explore opportunities for meeting them through collaboration and coordination, which the U.S. DOT and EC can help support.

This year’s symposium is on the global imperative of decarbonization. Because it is a leading emitter of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, the transportation sector is a major target in the drive towards net-zero emissions. The United States and Europe, along with the rest of the world, have a keen interest in pursuing early and significant reductions in transportation’s carbon footprint through technological, economic, and behavioral means that are efficient, equitable, and environmentally acceptable. The symposium’s discussions will focus on four key challenges: accelerating the transition to electrification and other low- and zero-carbon fuels; ensuring a fair and just transition to net zero; creating a land use-transportation nexus that is sustainable and resilient; and enlisting and leveraging digitalization, AI, and other integrated system-of-systems technologies.
