Technical Activities Division
The Technical Activities Division (TAD) provides a forum for transportation professionals to share and advance research. Through standing technical committees and thousands of volunteers, TAD addresses emerging issues and supports TRB’s mission. TAD staff and volunteers organize conferences, webinars, and TRB’s Annual Meeting—the world's largest conference of its kind. It also conducts annual field visits with state DOTs, universities, and industry. TAD disseminates research via the Transportation Research Record and Transportation Research Circulars. Staff experts in transportation, publishing, logistics, and operations oversee and support all volunteer activities.

Description
The Technical Activities Division (TAD) provides a forum for transportation professionals to identify, facilitate, and share research and information related to transportation. TAD carries out activities on behalf of TRB sponsors through a network of standing technical committees consisting of thousands of volunteers and friends. Standing committee chairs, members, and friends stay current on emerging issues while contributing to the continuing evolution of transportation research and practice.
TAD staff (consisting of professionals within each transportation mode and topic) as well as specialists in publishing, meeting logistics, and business operations) oversees the activities of TAD’s network of volunteers. Staff and volunteers collaborate on the following activities:
- Conferences, meetings, webinars, and workshops sponsored by many of TAD’s standing technical committees are carried out throughout the year;
- TRB’s Annual Meeting (held each January in Washington, D.C.) is the largest conference of its kind in the world with hundreds of sessions, workshops, and meetings;
- In support of the annual Field Visit Program, TRB staff meet on site with representatives of state DOTs, universities, modal agencies, and industry;
- Publications on transportation research results are published through the Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board (TRR) as well as through Transportation Research Circulars.
Our Volunteers
Standing technical committees and other volunteer groups in the Technical Activities Division (TAD) provide an opportunity for you to network with others in your field, and stay current on emerging issues while contributing to the continuing evolution of transportation research and practice. TAD volunteers are experts from all modes of transportation in many disciplines and represent the public, private, and academic sectors.
TAD standing committees are the engine behind TAD’s main activities, including:
The TRB Annual Meeting is hosted every year and is the largest transportation conference in the world with hundreds of sessions, workshops, and meetings. The Annual Meeting is held in January of every year in Washington, DC.
Conferences, meetings, webinars, and workshops are sponsored and cosponsored by many of the Division’s standing committees.
Transportation Research Record (TRR) publishes hundreds of peer-reviewed papers each year in all transportation modes and related disciplines.
Other publications are produced by the Technical Activities Division that showcase transportation innovations and research results through Conference Proceedings and Transportation Research Circulars.
Research Needs Statements identify current gaps in research, encouraging researchers around the world to take up the challenge and fill these gaps.
