Virtual Side-Event at the 8th Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum)
The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a virtual session, Operationalizing Sustainable Development: Localization of the Sustainable Development Goals on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 as part of the United Nations’ 8th Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology, and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum) Side Event.
In November 2022, the National Academies Committee on Operationalizing Sustainable Development released a short consensus report, Operationalizing Sustainable Development to Benefit People and the Planet that identifies key research priorities and possible actionable steps to operationalize sustainable development across eight interrelated themes. One key takeaway from the case studies presented in the report is that local communities have an important role to play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In addition to sharing the study findings, this virtual session highlighted a number of on-the-ground examples of localization, including the role of science, technology, and innovation and opportunities for engaging youth, civil society, and local governments in achieving the SDGs.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted a public release webinar of a new short consensus report on November 29 at 12:00-1:00 pm ET. The report, Operationalizing Sustainable Development to Benefit People and the Planet, identifies key research priorities and possible actionable steps to operationalize sustainable development. The committee convened two virtual public workshops in April and May 2022 to gather information on positive case studies across eight interrelated themes, which served as the primary source of evidence for its work. The committee hopes that positive case studies and information provided in this report will guide federal and local policy makers, researchers, practitioners, civil society, educators, business and philanthropic leaders, and other stakeholders in their efforts toward sustainable development.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, in collaboration with Arizona State University, held a virtual session, The Sustainable Development Goals and International Research Collaboration on Wednesday, April 28 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm EDT. The session was held on Day 3 of Nobel Prize Summit: Our Planet, Our Future.

The pandemic has made the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) more challenging, with increasing concerns about supply chain disruption, environmental degradation, and persistent inequalities. As the international community slowly adapts to a new normal, the pace of global policy discussions should accelerate to deliver much needed change. This special session highlighted the importance of international research collaboration for achieving the SDGs with a timeline of 2030. Presentations and facilitated discussions focused on the role of science, technology, and innovation in support of more effective policies and actions towards sustainability; advancing awareness of the SDGs with a particular focus on the youth, civil society, and the new US administration; and research agendas related to sustainability and the SDGs to inform post-2030 processes.

Our future depends on our collective ability to become effective stewards of the global commons – the climate, ice, land, ocean, freshwater, forests, soils and rich diversity of life.

The first Nobel Prize Summit brings together Nobel Laureates, scientists, policymakers, business leaders, and youth to explore the question: What can be achieved in this decade to put the world on a path to a more sustainable, more prosperous future for all of humanity?

Across three days, the virtual event will combine keynotes and lively discussion with live performance and theatre. Speakers will explore solutions to some of humanity’s greatest challenges: climate change and biodiversity loss, increasing inequality, and technological innovation in support of societal goals.

The Summit will ask: what can we learn from our collective response to the global pandemic? And, how can societies distinguish facts from fiction in a new information ecosystem?

The Nobel Prize Summit is hosted by the Nobel Foundation and organized by the National Academy of Sciences in partnership with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, and the Stockholm Resilience Centre/Beijer Institute.

The first two days of the Summit consists of three parts: ‘Our Planet’, ‘Breakthroughs’, and ‘Our Future’. The final day of the Summit consists of a series of online events to disseminate insights and findings to specific audiences.

The Summit will also host webinars and pre-filmed dialogues curated in the Summit’s screening room, plus networking sessions.

Outside of the main programme the organisers are hosting two scientific seminars, designed for Nobel Laureates and other scientific experts in global sustainability, but open to all. These sessions will discuss the role of science in supporting transformations towards global sustainability and resilient societies.

The National Academy of Sciences, in partnership with the Nobel Foundation, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, and the Stockholm Resilience Centre / Beijer Institute, will host the first-ever Nobel Prize Summit from April 26 to April 28, 2021. Framed around the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, the Summit will gather a powerful network of Nobel Laureates, together with world-leading scientists, business leaders, writers, politicians, artists, and young people. The purpose is to continue building trust in scientific reasoning while exploring transformative models for people and the planet on some of the most pressing existential challenges faced by humanity: (1) climate change and biodiversity loss, (2) rising inequality, and (3) rapid societal transformation enabled by emerging and converging technologies.

The COVID-19 pandemic and its catastrophic impact on human development has awakened the world to the fact that some crises can be solved only at a global scale. Ultimately, effective responses will require input from many parts of our societies, including from scientists, policymakers, and other experts, and the young people who are key stakeholders in the future livability of our planet. This Nobel Prize Summit Webinar will focus specifically on the role that global scientific collaboration plays in addressing pressing issues at the intersection of Science, Society, and Development.
