The NASEM Roundtable on Global Science Diplomacy intends to serve as an opportunity to advance knowledge at the intersection of science and policy by discussing how science diplomacy can help successfully navigate national and global challenges, address gaps in U.S. involvement in science diplomacy, including activities and initiatives of the U.S. government and non-governmental institutions, and investigate policy approaches.

Description
The Roundtable on Global Science Diplomacy will convene experts and practitioners from government, academia, and international organizations to utilize this neutral, informal channel to promote science diplomacy as a tool in addressing global challenges, informing global policy making and building societal relationships. There will be special focus on developing and mobilizing the next generation of science diplomats. The Roundtable will meet twice annually on a continuous basis. The goals of the Roundtable are to:
- Highlight promising practices and programs for increasing the input of science and technology into the conduct of foreign policy and international affairs;
- Conduct discussions on how science diplomacy can help deal successfully with national and global challenges;
- Investigate policy approaches to make international science and technology collaboration easier and more effective;
- Increase learning from examples of successes and failures to connect science to diplomacy within different scientific and diplomatic systems;
- Investigate approaches for preparing the next generation of science diplomats;
- Identify areas where science cooperation can provide a means of transcending traditional diplomatic tensions;
- Investigate approaches for supporting science communities during times of conflict; and
- Inform relevant U.S. government agencies on pressing issues associated with science diplomacy.
Roundtable discussions will be structured to propose additional activities such as topical workshops within the NASEM, as well as projects and programs to be pursued by others. The Roundtable will organize action groups to develop new activities under its auspices, starting with an Action Group on Rebuilding Engineering, Science, Education, and Technology in Ukraine (RESET Ukraine) and an Action Group on Science Diplomacy Education. The Roundtable will aim to host two workshops each year.
