One-Health Research Fellowship Program in Pakistan
The One Health (1-H) concept recognizes that the health of humans is connected to the health of animals and the environment (CDC 18 Oct. 2013). The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in partnership with the Pakistan Academy of Sciences are supporting a fellowship program to build the capacity of early to mid-career Pakistani scientists whose research projects follow the 1-H approach, and foster collaboration and cooperation in preparedness and response to zoonotic diseases and other shared environmental health risks.

Description
Following the pilot round of the Fellowship Program in One-Health Research (1-H) in Pakistan that was established in 2015 (DELS-ILAR-15-02), The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will continue with a second round that will expand the collaborative educational/research opportunities established between young investigators and their research mentors or lab directors from Pakistan and U.S./US-affiliated experts in 1-H science and research. According to the CDC “the One Health concept recognizes that the health of humans is connected to the health of animals and the environment.” The second round will continue to focus on medical and veterinary interventions relevant to zoonoses and emerging infectious diseases of interest and importance to Pakistan’s animal (wild-and agricultural) and human population as well as its ecosystem. The goals of this second round are:
- To sustain the core model of the Fellowship as a structure that fosters enduring international and national research collaborations that could be adapted and applied in different country settings.
- To expand the nascent 1-H research network in Pakistan that began with the 2015 cohort of Fellows.
- To continue to provide a broader context for 1-H issues (i.e., Fellows-initiated 1-H curriculum development in Pakistan; legal/regulatory structures; ethical issues; pedagogy for teaching 1-H as part of an academic science curriculum) and promote a non-proliferation culture using tenets of Responsible Science.
