Enhancing Visioning Impacts on Computing Research: A Workshop

In progress

Visioning is an activity used by the computing research community to identify computing-related societal challenges and emerging research opportunities and provide focus for those funding or conducting computing research. A workshop will look at prior visioning work and explore which types of visioning activities are best suited to achieve particular goals and how they can be most effectively designed and implemented.

Description

A National Academies workshop will explore computing research visioning--processes for identifying and shaping future high-impact research directions, opportunities, and initiatives--by reviewing past practices, considering current approaches, and examining visioning needs to identify success factors and good practices. The workshop will address such topics as (1) identifying which types of activities are best suited to achieve particular goals, (2) drafting effective charters for visioning participants, (3) selecting appropriate participants, (4) balancing feasibility with high-risk, high-reward initiatives, and (5) evaluating the success of visioning activities.
