The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine organized a public workshop that explore research priorities to inform readiness and response to the ongoing Avian Influenza A (H5N1) outbreak in the United States. Recognizing the interconnection between people, animals, and their shared environment, the workshop took a One Health approach to bring together federal government agencies, the academic community, and the private sector, as well as other relevant stakeholders across the health, agriculture, and food safety sectors and focused primarily on basic science and research questions of specific concern:

What is the relevant scientific evidence and state of current scientific knowledge?
What research is ongoing and what new results can be anticipated?
What gaps remain and what research should be initiated?

The workshop discussions may help inform future research that could provide local, national, and global communities with information about virus transmission, mitigation of risks, and appropriate measures to prevent the spread of disease. The planning committee developed the agenda for the workshop, selected and invited speakers and discussants, and moderated the discussions. After the workshop, a designated rapporteur will prepare a proceedings-in-brief based on the presentations and discussions, in accordance with institutional guidelines.

On Monday, September 23, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm ET, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted an open online public listening session to hear perspectives on potential research priorities for the ongoing Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A (H5N1) outbreak.
