TRB Webinar: How To Use Self-Consolidating Concrete in Bridge Applications

June 11, 2020

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM (EDT)

Past

Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) is a highly flowable, nonsegregating concrete that is placed without any mechanical consolidation. TRB conducted a webinar on Thursday, June 11, 2020, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM Eastern that discussed how SCC may be used to fill heavily congested or irregularly shaped members in bridge applications more easily while providing improved in-place quality and surface finish. The use of SCC may also decrease construction costs due to the reduced labor requirements during construction. Presenters discussed the properties and construction aspects of SCC. They also examined how it can be used in real-world examples.

This webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Committee on Basic Research and Emerging Technologies Related to Concrete.

The slides are available. Contact Reggie Gillum for a copy of the recorded webinar.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  1. Introduction, fresh properties, and testing of SCC: Kamal Khayat, Missouri University of Science and Technology
  2. Hardened properties of SCC: George Morcous, University of Nebraska, Lincoln
  3. Contractor’s perspective on using SCC in bridge projects: Oscar Antommattei, Kiewet Engineering Group, Inc.
  4. SCC implementation in real-world state department of transportation projects: Celik Ozyildirim, Virginia Department of Transportation
  5. Questions and answers: Moderated by Anton Schindler, Auburn University

The first 90 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe SCC’s fresh properties and test methods
  2. Discuss the impact of SCC on concrete hardened properties
  3. List potential real-world applications for SCC

Professional Development Hour Information

Professional engineers (PEs) who register and attend the entire webinar as an individual will be awarded 2.0 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). TRB’s webinar program awards PDH credits only to the registered individual, and not to other members of a group that view the webinar together. To be eligible for the credits, individuals must remain signed in for the entire webinar, including for any question and answer session following the presentations.

Pre-registration is required. Once the webinar starts, you will be unable to register. Individuals that are registered for a webinar but do not receive their confirmation emails due to their organization’s internal firewalls should contact the TRB Helpdesk for assistance in signing in.
Please check with your licensing board to ensure that TRB webinar PDHs are approved by your board.
TRB will report credits earned to the Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP). Complaints about registered providers may be sent to RCEP, 1015 15th Street, NW, 8th Floor, Washington, D.C., 20005.
