TRB Webinar: Entrained Air-Void Systems for Durable Highway Concrete

October 26, 2021

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM (EDT)

Past

Laboratory testing and field experience have shown that highway concrete should be properly air entrained to resist the action of freezing and thawing, particularly in wet climates. TRB hosted a webinar on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 from 1:00-2:30 PM Eastern that investigated requirements for the air-void system parameters of concrete used in highway pavements and structures. Presenters discussed the proposed modifications to the current AASHTO test methods for evaluating concrete resistance to freezing and thawing. They also examined innovative test methods to effectively characterize the air system in fresh concrete and identify the characteristics of the air-void system that are related to the performance of field concrete under freeze-thaw conditions.

This webinar features research from NCHRP Research Report 961: Entrained Air-Void Systems for Durable Highway Concrete.

The slides are linked in the meeting materials below. Click here to view the recording.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  1. Laboratory investigation of alternative test methods for air void systems: Peter Taylor, Iowa State University
  2. Field review of pavement performance as a function of air void systems: Hamed Sadati, California Department of Transportation
  3. Laboratory investigation of alternative freeze-thaw tests on hardened concrete: John Kevern, University of Missouri, Kansas City
  4. Question and answer session: Peter Taylor, Iowa State University

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify requirements for the air-void system parameters of concrete
  2. Discuss innovative test methods for effectively characterizing the air system
