Past
Extreme weather results in unprecedented increasingly common rainfall intensities. Additionally, the majority of infrastructure flood inundation cases occur at sparsely gauged locations, which adds a compounding complexity to the accuracy of flood prediction, mitigation measures, and spatial extents. TRB hosted a webinar on Wednesday, September 21, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM Eastern that included presentations describing recent transportation project cases to estimate, mitigate, and prepare for flooding. Case studies include agencies such as NASA, Virginia Department of Transportation, District Department of Transportation, Washington D.C., City of Virginia Beach, VA, and Chesterfield County, VA.
This webinar was sponsored by the TRB Standing Technical Committees on Mechanics and Drainage of Saturated and Unsaturated Geomaterials and Hydrology, Hydraulics, and Stormwater.
The slides are linked in the meeting materials. View the recorded webinar below.
Webinar agenda and presenters
- Estimating precipitation for resilient infrastructure design – Roger Kilgore, Kilgore Consulting and Management
- Floodplain mitigation strategies for coast installation resiliency – Gamal Hassan, Hassan Water Resources, PLC
- Resilient infrastructure response to extreme rainfall events – Murari Paudel, Hassan Water Resources, PLC
- Question and answer session moderated by John Siekmeier, Minnesota Department of Transportation
The first 60 minutes of the webinar were for presentations and the final 30 minutes were reserved for audience questions.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, participants can:
- Estimate precipitation for resilient infrastructure design
- Define floodplain mitigation strategies for coastal installation resiliency
- Improve response to extreme rainfall events
Professional Development Hour Information
Professional engineers (PEs) who register and attend the entire webinar as an individual will be awarded 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). TRB’s webinar program awards PDH credits only to the registered individual, and not to other members of a group that view the webinar together. To be eligible for the credits, individuals must remain signed in for the entire webinar, including for any question and answer session following the presentations.
