Description
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a Standing Committee on Gulf Legacy Offshore Oil and Gas Infrastructure to support the Gulf Research Program (GRP) in programmatic activities associated with legacy offshore oil and gas infrastructure, that is, oil and gas infrastructure no longer in use. Increasing in the Gulf Coast and across the U.S., this infrastructure can create environmental, financial, navigational, and safety risks for surrounding communities. In particular, the committee will 1) examine relevant work completed by the GRP, 2) advise on synthesizing GRP-funded research efforts in this area, 3) inform convenings hosted by the GRP, and 4) provide advice on future programmatic opportunities. The standing committee will support the GRP in programmatic efforts that “enhance the safety of offshore oil drilling and hydrocarbon production and transportation in the Gulf of Mexico and on the United States’ outer continental shelf,” as outlined in the GRP’s settlement language.
