New Voices at the White House

New Voices members across all cohorts attended meetings at the White House arranged by Ali Nouri (Cohort 2018-20) to learn about the role scientists can play in the U.S. rule making process. During their visit, New Voices members bet with Shagufta Ahmed from the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, Kei Koizumi and Rian Bahran, Ph.D. from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Helena Fu from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

New Voices member speaks at the first State of the Science Address

Steffi Diem (Cohort 2021-23) spoke on a panel following the first State of the Science address. The event explored how U.S. science and innovation are positioned to respond to rising global competition and shifting priorities for the nation’s economy, security, public health, and well-being. Building on the topics touched on by Dr. McNutt's State of the Science address, Steffi highlighted the ways in which New Voices showcases the importance of interdisciplinary and international science collaboration. Launch of Searchable New Voices All-Member Database

On February 1st, 2024, the New Voices All-Member Database was launched on the New Voices page to give easy public access to a comprehensive list of current and former New Voices members, including key details about their professional and personal backgrounds. The database currently displays biographical information for 60 members. Users are now able to search the database by applying filtering criteria to find New Voices members working in specific sectors or disciplines. Search the database

Leading content at the Arab-American Frontiers Symposium

Umut Gurkan (Cohort 2021-23) served as co-chair on the planning committee for the 9th Arab-American Frontiers symposium hosted in Doha, Qatar, October 23 - 25, 2023. The meeting convened U.S. and Arab scientists, engineers, and medical professionals to discuss major scientific advances on a wide array of topics relevant to the MENA region and globally. New Voices Cohort 2 members Enrico Castillo (Cohort 2021-23) and Steffi Diem (21') also attended and presented sessions at the Symposium. Learn more about the event

Supporting K-12 STEM Education with GUIRR

On February 6-7, 2024, Jamaji C. Nwanaji-Enwerem (Cohort 2024-26), attended the Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable Workshop on "Supporting K-12 STEM Education to Create the Foundations for Innovation." Senior leaders from government, university, industry, and philanthropy convened with educational experts to discuss the evolving state of K-12 STEM education, early entrepreneurship education and the future of the STEM workforce, how to encourage science-based economic development through regional education programs, and mapping the future of early STEM education to prepare an innovation-based workforce. Jamaji contributed to these conversations from the perspective of a medical practitioner and early-career professional.

"New Voices for a Better Society" article published in PNAS

In "New voices for a better society," members from cohorts '18 and '21 explain the vision behind the creation of the program, its mission, and how its members use an interdisciplinary approach to address complex challenges. Sharing Best Practices at the ISC Global Knowledge Dialogue for Latin America and the Caribbean

On April 9-11, 2024, Mariel S. Lavieri (Cohort 2024-2026) attended the ISC Global Knowledge Dialogue for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) conference. She represented New Voices in the "Early and Mid-Career Researchers Forum," sharing best practices from the New Voices program and discussing emerging challenges and opportunities for collaboration. Elected officers, executive officers, ISC focal points and other key decision makers of ISC Members, including scientific unions, associations, academies, and national bodies, along with ISC Fellows, gathered to discuss the strategic roadmap required for the LAC region to effectively progress global agendas.

On July 1, 2024, Amanda Vernon (Cohort 2024-26) began a term of service on the National Academies' Board on Higher Education and Workforce, which provides the academic community, policymakers, and businesses with insights and recommendations on critical higher education and workforce issues facing the nation. Mahdieh Aghazadeh (Cohort 2021-23) was appointed to serve on the National Academies' Chemical Sciences Roundtable, which explores cutting-edge topics to inform and advance the fields of chemistry and chemical engineering and fosters collaboration among experts across sectors. New Voices member reviews National Academies report on International Talent in a Changing Global Landscape

In Summer 2024, Amanda Vernon (Cohort 2024-26) served as a reviewer for the National Academies' consensus study report, "International Talent Programs in the Changing Global Environment," released by the Policy and Global Affairs Division. The study reviews foreign and domestic talent or incentive programs and recommends ways to improve the effectiveness of U.S. mechanisms for attracting and retaining the best and brightest scholars, relative to programs and incentives used by the U.S.’s strategic competitors. New Voices member participates in the Canadian Academy of Engineering Conference

On May 27–28, 2024, Steffi Diem (Cohort 2021–23) attended the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) Conference, Engineering Extremes for Fusion Energy, in London, Ontario. She was invited to participate in part due to her role as a U.S. Science Envoy and as a member of the New Voices program. Diem delivered a presentation during the Fellowship Showcase on fusion energy and engaged with CAE leadership interested in advancing Canada’s fusion initiatives and exploring ways to involve early-career engineers, drawing inspiration from the New Voices model.

New Voices perspectives reflected in UNDP Report

On April 25, 2024, the International Science Council (ISC) held a roundtable discussion with the UN Development Program (UNDP) to gather input on emerging themes for the "UNDP Signals Spotlight 2024 Report", which will focus on intergenerational equity. The discussion aimed to test key signals, trends, and implications for development with ISC members and partners before finalizing the report. New Voices members Mariel S. Lavieri (Cohort 2024-26) and Mitul Luhar (Cohort 2024-26) participated in the roundtable as part of the New Voices program. Their contributions are acknowledged in the final report.

New Voices member to Serve as U.S. Science Envoy

We are thrilled to announce that Steffi Diem, New Voices Cohort Member 21', is among the four scientists selected to serve as a U.S. Science Envoy due to her work in fusion energy. Dr. Diem will leverage her expertise and networks to forge connections and identify opportunities for sustained international cooperation. For the first time in the history of the U.S. Science Envoy Program, the U.S. Department of State has selected an all-women cohort of distinguished scientists.

Academic Exchange Series

The Academic Exchange Series provides a platform for fellows to present their research findings within their respective disciplines, fostering a vibrant culture of collaboration and constructive critique. Each presenter is allocated 20 minutes to showcase their research, followed by an interactive 30-minute segment for fellow attendees to engage in an exchange of questions, insights, and feedback. Guiding these discussions are distinguished moderators drawn from the Ford alumni community, leveraging their expertise to steer conversations toward fruitful exploration and scholarly discourse.

New Voices at the Second U.S.-Africa Frontiers of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Symposium

Four New Voices members were invited to speak at, co-chair and attend the 2nd U.S.-Africa Frontiers of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Symposium in Rabat. Ayodeji Coker, Asmeret Asefaw Berhe, Meghana Gadgil and Abhishek Roy joined Science and Engineering Capacity Development theme lead Dalal Najib and National Academy of Sciences President Marcia McNutt. The U.S.-Africa program brings together outstanding young scientists, engineers, and medical professionals from the United States and the member countries of the African Union for a series of symposia to discuss exciting advances and opportunities in their fields.
