Frontiers of Materials That Learn
Oct. 2
Advances in materials research are unlocking the potential of materials that learn. “Learning materials” have the ability to sense and adapt to new environments, perform intelligent tasks such as image recognition, and serve a structural purpose. This workshop will bring together researchers from across materials design, condensed matter physics, biomaterials, and industry to discuss opportunities, and how to move toward the scalable design and manufacturing of these learning systems.
National Academy of Engineering Annual Meeting
Oct. 5 and 6
The National Academy of Engineering’s annual meeting will bring together leading voices in engineering and technology to explore opportunities and risks in the era of artificial intelligence. The event will feature an address from NAE President Tsu-Jae Liu, the induction of new NAE members, a special lecture on engineering and society, and a forum highlighting AI’s impact on society.
Enhancing Domestic Uranium Production for Nuclear Energy
Oct. 8
This meeting will explore current uranium production in the United States and its potential as a domestic source for nuclear energy to enhance U.S. energy security. Speakers and panel discussions will consider the availability and economic viability of uranium in the U.S., and identify opportunities to enhance U.S. uranium production.
Regulating a ‘Miracle Drug’: GLP-1 Costs, Access, and Safety

Part of the National Academy of Medicine’s Health in the Headlines series, this webinar will cover what patients, physicians, insurers, policymakers, and researchers should know about GLP-1 cost, access, and safety.
National Academy of Medicine Annual Meeting
Oct. 19 and 20
The National Academy of Medicine’s annual meeting features a daylong scientific program on AI and health that will include panel discussions on AI’s role in transforming medicine, AI governance and ethics, and more, followed by the president’s forum. Aviv Regev, executive vice president of Genentech, will give the keynote address. In addition, the NAM will welcome new members and fellows and present various awards.
Hardening the Electricity Transmission and Distribution System for Increased Reliability
Oct. 22
The electricity system is facing increasing challenges to maintaining reliable service, including growing demand, aging infrastructure, cyber and physical security risks, extreme weather events, and supply chain issues. This webinar will discuss promising approaches for system investments and steps that would increase the reliability of the electricity transmission and distribution systems.
Understanding Brain-Body Interactions to Advance Brain Health
Oct. 22 and 23
This workshop will explore the bidirectional communication between the brain and peripheral organ systems, and how these interactions may inform new therapeutic development and foster a more holistic approach to brain health.
Advanced AI for Earth Systems Forecasting
Oct. 23
After experts present an overview of the history of Earth systems forecasting, a moderated discussion of innovative approaches that integrate advanced AI will follow.
Exploring Applications of AI in Genomics and Precision Health
Oct. 28
Leaders from academia, private industry, and federal research agencies will discuss the role of AI in advancing genomics and precision health, including potential future applications. The workshop will explore accuracy and bias in AI technologies and examine lessons learned from other uses of AI.
Rethinking Researcher Assessment and Incentives at U.S. Academic Institutions
Oct. 28 and 29
This workshop will explore new approaches to expand the criteria for which researchers are assessed at U.S. academic institutions beyond traditional outputs such as grants, publications, and citation counts.
Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education
Oct. 28 and 29
This summit will feature panel discussions, presentations, and a poster session to share research and discuss innovative and promising approaches for addressing and preventing sexual harassment at colleges, universities, and research organizations.

Release dates for reports and proceedings from the National Academies depend on successful completion of the review process and publishing schedules. State of the Science and the Future of Cumulative Impact Assessment
Using an interdisciplinary approach, this report will explore the state of the science of cumulative impact assessment and its application at the community, state, and national levels.
