Rethinking Public Transit in Emergency Evacuations Aug. 4 Transit systems can support mass evacuations, reduce congestion, aid carless individuals, and preserve critical response capacities in large-scale emergencies. This meeting will focus on lessons learned from recent wildfire evacuations, including LA Metro’s response to the 2025 wildfires and its future planning, and a case study of the 2021 Caldor Fire.
Strategies and Levers for Health-Centered Climate Action Aug. 5 and 6 Part of a workshop series, this event will identify the structural levers most critical to accelerating health-centered climate action and examine how these levers interact to drive systems transformation. It will also look at the conditions that shape the feasibility and impact of these levers across diverse country and sectoral contexts.
From Longevity to Vitality: Applying the Science of Aging Aug. 12 Part of a series, this webinar will explore how policymakers can leverage scientific understanding of aging to promote thriving and healthy populations. Panelists will also discuss how people learn and adapt as they age, strategies to boost cognitive health and healthy aging across the lifespan, and the public health impacts of loneliness and isolation.
AI, Energy Demand, and the Environment Aug. 15 The projected growth in electricity demand from AI-driven data centers challenges climate mitigation, water resources, and low-cost electricity goals. This webinar will bring together social science and industry experts to discuss topics related to consumer and corporate use of artificial intelligence, what role sharing of environmental information might play in consumer and corporate behavior, and the insights social science can provide to help achieve the economic and environmental goals of both consumers and firms.
Educational Pathways for a Climate-Ready Workforce Aug. 22 This webinar will explore how colleges, universities, community colleges, and trade schools prepare learners for careers that support climate solutions. Speakers will highlight efforts to expand educational pathways for resiliency-focused jobs, as well as skills needed to address the effects of climate change.
Reports Scheduled for Release in August Release dates for reports and proceedings from the National Academies depend on successful completion of the review process and publishing schedules. Reporters who would like to be notified when a report is due for release should contact the Office of News and Public Information (email news@nas.edu) and ask to be placed on a contact list.
School Active Shooter Drills: Mitigating Risks to Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Health This congressionally mandated report focuses on the impact of active shooter drills and other school security measures on K-12 students’ mental, emotional, and behavioral health and well-being. It includes recommendations on policy and practice that take children’s diversity into consideration and minimize potential adverse effects for students and school staff.
