International Forum on Responsible Bioeconomy Innovation
Building on recent efforts by the United States and India toward the development of the bio-economy and biomanufacturing, the National Academies is establishing an international forum on the bioeconomy jointly with Indian partners. The Forum will engage diverse experts from industry, government, and academia with expertise across various sectors to address global bioeconomy challenges, emphasizing responsible innovation and best practices while fostering R&D. On 2/26/2025, the U.S. Department of State informed the National Academy of Sciences that it should terminate all work on this activity. This activity has ended, and a final product was not released.
Description
The National Academies will establish an international forum on bioeconomy. This forum will provide a neutral setting for addressing science and security issues related to governance of bioeconomy, especially the governance of its products including its goods, data, and services across nations. The forum will (a) explore in-depth and over time the role of emerging biotechnologies and enabling technologies in advancing the bioeconomy and possibly increasing international security risks; (b) discuss national-level policies, multilateral norms and international standards and best practices generally for biotechnology and biomanufacturing that may be used to promote and protect the U.S. and Indian bioeconomy and relevant subsectors; and (c) capture perspectives of various interest groups, such as the government and private sector in both countries, to enhance buy-in and adoption of these norms and standards. This forum will be initiated with a two-year pilot effort between India and the U.S.
