Service-Learning in Undergraduate Geosciences: A Workshop

Completed

An ad hoc committee planned and conducedt a 2 day public workshop that explored how service-learning is being used in geoscience education, the potential benefits, and the strength of the evidence base. Presenters and participants at the workshop discussed which student outcomes are most likely to be influenced by a service-learning experience, what “best practices” might look like, the potential challenges to implementing service-learning in undergraduate geoscience courses, and areas where research is needed.

Description

An ad hoc committee will plan and conduct a 2 day public workshop that will explore how service-learning is being used in geoscience education, the potential benefits, and the strength of the evidence base. Presenters and participants at the workshop will discuss which student outcomes are most likely to be influenced by a service-learning experience, what “best practices” might look like, the potential challenges to implementing service-learning in undergraduate geoscience courses, and areas where research is needed. The workshop will feature invited presentations and discussion. It will provide an opportunity for discussion between expert researchers and practitioners in complementary fields, such as undergraduate geoscience, higher education administration, service-learning both within geoscience and in other fields, science learning at the undergraduate level, and higher education administration (to address infrastructure and resource issues). The committee will develop the agenda topics, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussion. A summary of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
