The Board on Science Education held a virtual summit October 14-15, 2021, and December 8, 2021, that was designed to take stock of the implementation of state science standards, considering implementation across all states and territories to identify successes, challenges, and identify areas where additional work is needed.

This two-day convening will build from this and other activities to:

Identify the conditions for implementation that will support a more equitable and coherent system of science education.
Develop a road map for implementation efforts looking forward that supports research, policymaking, and shifts in practice.

Please join us–either in person in Washington, D.C. or virtually on April 26 and 27, 2022–as we continue these important conversations and work collaboratively to determine the current state of implementation and how we can encourage positive development in this area moving forward.

Science standards implementation is a broad landscape that covers a wide array of levers to include how much time is devoted to science and engineering, the tools and resources that are available, and teacher preparation and use of particular pedagogical approaches. The preparation of our educators is central to these conversations. Please join the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Board on Science Education for a series of webinars based on the recent summit on Taking Stock of Science Standards Implementation. This final webinar in the series, moderated by Susan Gomez Zwiep, will consider the pathways for teacher preparation. Panel and small group think time are structures that will be implemented in this webinar as we reflect on and discuss as a community the preparation of our educators.

Science standards implementation is a broad landscape that covers a wide array of levers to include how much time is devoted to science and engineering, the tools and resources that are available, and teacher preparation and use of particular pedagogical approaches. Teachers are central to this work. Please join the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Board on Science Education for a series of webinars based on the recent summit on Taking Stock of Science Standards Implementation. This fourth webinar, moderated by K. Renae Pullen, will take a closer look at how teachers work to implement science and engineering in their classrooms. A panel discussion, small group think time banded by grade levels, and full group discussion will enable the field to consider and showcase best practices within the classroom.

Informal partners play an important role not just for production of materials, but also have many opportunities for youth and adults to engage in 3D science and engineering learning. Please join the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Board on Science Education for a series of webinars based on the recent summit on Taking Stock of Science Standards Implementation. The third webinar in the series, moderated by Elizabeth Mulkerrin, will include panel discussion and small group think time as the conversation centers on the opportunities that exist within informal education spaces.

How this is happening in our rural communities is of utmost importance. Please join the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Board on Science Education for a series of webinars based on the recent summit on Taking Stock of Science Standards Implementation. The second webinar in the series, moderated by Tom Keller, will hone in on implementation efforts within rural communities. A panel discussion with small group think time will be used to allow the science education community to reflect on and discuss how to best support rural science standards implementation efforts.
