Description
An ad hoc committee of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) will work with the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and a partner organization in another South or South East Asian country to convene an international workshop on biological safety and biological risk management. Experts in life science, biological safety, and disease surveillance from academia, industry, and government research laboratories will gather to discuss topics such as the following: special challenges associated with operating in BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories; facility risk assessment; laboratory training and certification; mechanisms for reporting laboratory-associated infections; right sizing the regulatory environment; regional transport of samples and specimens; matching precautions to risks; and responsible research practices in pursuit of the benefits of life science research. Participants may also discuss the role science academies can play and suggest next steps for promotion of biological safety and biological risk management in the South and South East Asian region. The committee will plan the content of the workshop, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate the discussions. A individually-authored summary of the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
