2023 Young Scientists Summer Program Awards Announced

IIASA announced the 2023 Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) awards to three exceptional young scientists. Gaurav Ganti, Lucas Vivier, and Huiying Ye will receive grants allowing them to return to IIASA and continue their research collaborations for three additional months. Gaurav Ganti from the Humboldt University of Berlin received the Peccei Award for his work with the IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE). Ganti’s YSSP project on ““Pathways to Inform the Equitable Implementation of the Paris Agreement”” was prepared under the supervision of IIASA researchers Setu Pelz and Matthew Gidden Lucas Vivier from the Centre International Recherche sur l'Environnement et le Développement (CIRED) near Paris was awarded the Levien Award for his work with the IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE) Program on “Decarbonizing the EU Residential Sector: A Modelling Assessment of Current Policies and Future Strategies”. Huiying Ye from the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) was awarded the Mikhalevich Award for her work, with the Advancing Systems Analysis (ASA) Program for her project “Linking R&D Investment to Emission Reduction Cooperation: Overcoming Free-Riding While Achieving Deep De-Carbonization ”. IIASA Offers Inaugural Summer School on Systems Modeling

IIASA will offer, for the first time, a Summer School on Systems Modeling (15-26th July 2024). The two-week school is designed for Master’s, PhD and post-doctoral researchers who wish to use or develop models broadly related to the sustainability agenda. The goal is to equip participants with a solid understanding of modeling practices and limitations of models. Many examples will be taken from IIASA’s portfolio of tools and methods, ranging from ecological models, socio-economic systems, to integrated assessment tools of energy, air, water, biodiversity, and food. The IIASA Website offers more details on the Program, Application process and Location and Accommodation. Applicants are asked for a succinct motivation statement, and should have some quantitative skills including some knowledge of scientific programming. Successful applicants will be notified by 3 May. The National Academies has a limited number of fellowships, funded by the National Science Foundation, to support fees, travel and living expenses for successful applicants who are U.S. citizens or are enrolled in U.S. graduate programs. 2-Week hands-on course, 15-26 JulyApply by 24 April The U.S. Committee for IIASA at the National Academy of Sciences will host an Online Information Session on Friday, April 5, at 11:00 a.m. EDT for potential candidates.

Flagship IIASA Report Released

In an official UN event associated with the Sustainable Development Goals mid-term review, IIASA launched its Flagship Report, "Systems Analysis for Sustainable Wellbeing. 50 Years of IIASA Research, 40 Years After the Brundtland Commission, Contributing to the Post-2030 Global Agenda” on 13 September 2023. The publication is organized into six parts, summarizing past and current IIASA research highlights and pointing toward future challenges and solutions. In the final chapter, the authors offer three critical policy messages to stimulate discussions about a post-2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Suboptimization is suboptimal: Mainstream a systems-analysis approach into policymaking at all levels to ensure that broader, longer-term considerations are incorporated. Enhance individual agency: Provide equal access to quality primary and secondary education for all, and in particular for women, as a means of promoting gender equality and empowerment. New Director General John Schellnhuber Stresses IIASAs Bridge Building Role

Professor Hans Joachim ("John") Schellnhuber assumed the position of IIASA Director General on 1 December 2023. Professor Schellnhuber brings a wealth of experience gained in both leadership and academic positions. He served as the founding director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research from 1992 to 2018 and held the position of research director at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research in the UK from 2001 to 2005. His research in mathematical physics, complexity theory, earth systems analysis, climate change modeling, and sustainability science has earned him worldwide recognition and memberships in the National Academy of Sciences, the German National Academy Leopoldina, and the Pontifical Academy. Professor Schellnhuber expressed his view of the importance of IIASA, saying “IIASA was founded in 1972 to build bridges between the West and the East through the universal power of scientific truth. This power is needed even more today in a multipolar world shaken by unprecedented crises.” He has been active since beginning his tenure at IIASA, addressing the climate crisis in lectures and interviews. Registration open for the 2023 Young Scientists Summer Program*

Every year, from June 1st – August 31st, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) hosts up to 50 doctoral students from around the world for a transformative summer research experience known as the Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP). The U.S. National Committee for IIASA again welcomes advanced graduate students to apply for the 2023 YSSP program. Funding for U.S. applicants comes from a grant to the National Academies from the National Science Foundation. What is IIASA? IIASA is an international research institute based near Vienna, Austria. A global leader in systems analysis, IIASA conducts policy-oriented, multidisciplinary research into challenges that are too large or complex to be solved by a single country or discipline. International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis holds YSSP Webinar

The International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis, based in Laxenburg, Austria, will hold a webinar on the 2023 Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP). The webinar will feature IIASA staff, plus current and former YSSP awardees. This is an opportunity for prospective YSSP students to learn more about the program and ask questions. IIASA 50th Celebration held by IIASA, USNC and Friends of IIASA at Boston University

In celebration of the its 50th year, IIASA, the US National Member Organization Committee, and Friends of IIASA hosted a one-day, in-person conference at Boston University’s Pardee School of Global Studies on May 26th. The program highlighted both the institute’s research accomplishments and its pioneering role as an instrument of science diplomacy. The crowd of in-person and virtual participants celebrated the institute’s past with speeches from previous presidents and scholars, looked to its future with panels from former Young Scientists Summer Program alumni, and connected with a diverse assortment of people in the U.S. IIASA community at a reception. NASEM-IIASA Webinar Series to be Held August 31-September 28, 2020

Science, engineering, and medicine perform an important role in meeting sustainability challenges on global, regional and local scales. They advance the scientific understanding of the needs involved, and inform public understanding and policy decisions. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) identify a way to achieve a better and more sustainable future. The 3-part webinar series, Sustainability and the SDGs: Promoting a Dynamic Science-Policy Interface, cohosted by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), explores this theme from three perspectives. Monday, August 31: "Sustainability and The World in 2050" will be moderated by Leena Srivastava, Deputy Director General for Science at IIASA. The speakers are Nebojsa Nakicenovic, Emertius Research Scholar at IIASA, and Franklin Carrero-Martinez, Senior Director, Global Policy and Development & Science and Technology for Sustainability at the NASEM. Monday, September 14: "The Science-Policy-Society Interface" will be moderated by Marcia McNutt, President of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). The speakers are Albert van Jaarsveld, Director General and CEO of IIASA, and William Colglazier, Senior Scholar, Center for Science Diplomacy, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Monday, September 28: "Science Diplomacy" will be moderated by Vaughan Turekian, Executive Director, Policy and Global Affairs at the NASEM. Two U.S. YSSPers Chosen For Top Awards*

U.S. doctoral students and members of the 2019 Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) were awarded the top two YSSP prizes. Felicia Chang (University of California) won the Peccei Award for "Concurrent temperature and precipitation shifts in historical and historical natural-only model simulations," her study in the IIASA Water program. Nicolas Choquette-Levy (Princeton University) was awarded the Mikhalevich Award for "The impact of risk sharing mechanisms on smallholder farmer climate adaptation strategies," his study in the Advanced System Analysis, World Population, and Risk and Resilience Programs. IIASA Developing New Strategic and Science Plans

IIASA is currently developing its next ten-year strategic plan. IIASA shared the draft strategic plan with its National Member Organizations in early fall 2019. Feedback was incorporated into a revised plan that was considered by the IIASA Council in November 2019. Further revision and consultation will occur in early 2020. Upon completion of the Strategic Plan, IIASA will turn to the drafting of a 5-year Science Plan. The U.S. NMO Committee will review and comment on this document as well.

The Digital Revolution and Sustainable Development: Opportunities and Challenges*

On May 14, IIASA organized a side event, The Digital Revolution and Sustainable Development: Opportunities and Challenges, at the Fourth UN Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology, and Innovation for the SDGs (STI Forum). William Colglazier, a U.S. National Committee member, and Lucile Spini, ISC, were two of the five speakers. Naki Nakicenovic, IIASA, moderated the event. The abstract states, "The Digital Revolution, which although is arguably the single greatest enabler of sustainable development, has, in the past, created many negative externalities like transgression of planetary boundaries. Progress on the SDGs will be facilitated if we can build and implement detailed STI roadmaps at levels that range from local to global. This is central as STI drives all SDGs and one of the most fundamental disruptive changes in human history – the digital revolution which puts comprehensive artificial intelligence at the centre. A major challenge will be how to use the transformative nature of digitalization to create wealthy and inclusive economies and societies." Publication - Connections with SIAM*

Growing out of a discussion at the U.S. National Committee's April 2018 meeting, committee member Stephen Robinson (University of Wisconsin-Madison) teamed up with IIASA staff members Elena Rovenskaya and Ulf Dieckmann to write articles for the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). The first appeared in SIAM News in January 2017: "Systems Analysis to Inform and Support Global Transformations." The article served as an introduction to IIASA for many in the SIAM community. A second article, "Integrated Catastrophic Risk Management: Robust Balance between Ex-ante and Ex-post Measures" by Yuri M. Ermoliev, Stephen M. Robinson, Elena A. Rovenskaya, and Tatiyana Y. Ermolieva was published in the July 2, 2018 issue of SIAM News. Regional Conference for the Americas*

In fall 2019, IIASA and its national member organizations launched a series of regional conferences. The regional conference for the Americas was held on September 5-6, 2019 in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Co-hosted by IIASA, CAPES, the US National Academy of Sciences, and the Getulio Vargas Foundation, the conference identified challenges shared by countries in the region and explored how the multilateral application of systems analysis can be used to address those challenges. Individuals representing IIASA’s three member countries in the Americas—the United States, Brazil, and Mexico—were featured. More information. NASA and IIASA Interactions*

On March 25, 2019, Jack Kaye, Associate Director for Research of NASA's Earth Science Division, visited IIASA, met with the Director General and Specific Staff, and delivered a talk entitled, "Viewing the Earth's Global Environment from Space: From Scientific Knowledge to Societal Benefits." IIASA is also now a partner in the NASA Harvest program, "a new, multidisciplinary consortium commissioned by NASA and led by the University of Maryland to enhance the use of satellite data in decision making related to food security and agriculture domestically and globally... The consortium anchors a broad network of partners drawn from universities, government agencies and government research organizations, NGOs, international multi-lateral organizations and the private sector, representing end users, information and service providers, and applications researchers." U.S. National Committee Annual Meetings

The U.S. National Committee met in Washington, DC on October 22, 2019. The major topics were the U.S. response to the IIASA draft implementation plan, and U.S. involvement in the Regional Conference for the Americas. Additional topics included outreach to the U.S. scientific and policy community, recruitment and support for IIASA’s Young Scientists Summer Program, and connections to the Friends of IIASA. The Committee also met in Washington, DC on December 13, 2018. Topics included IIASA Task Force implementation, IIASA membership concerns, ideas related to the IIASA regional conferences, and outreach to the U.S. scientific community through society meetings, such as AAAS and AGU. Guests included Albert van Jaarsveld, the IIASA Director General, and other IIASA staff in Washington, DC for the AGU meeting.
