Description
The U.S. Committee for the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) carries out the responsibilities of the National Academy of Sciences as the U.S. National Member Organization (NMO) of IIASA. These responsibilities include participating in governance of the institute via representation on the IIASA Council, ensuring that U.S. interests are reflected in IIASA’s research agenda and activities, and encouraging IIASA engagement with the U.S. science and policy communities.
IIASA is a non-governmental, independent scientific institution located in Laxenburg, just outside Vienna, Austria. Founded in 1972, IIASA is the outcome of a U.S.-Soviet initiative with a goal of fostering collaborative scientific research across East-West divides during the Cold War. From its earliest days, IIASA has emphasized the use of innovative modeling and applied mathematical methods, applying systems analysis approaches to the problems of modern societies. IIASA’s researchers collaborate with scientists and policy makers around the world, forming interdisciplinary teams aimed at advancing understanding and finding solutions to global and universal challenges such as sustainable energy, water and agricultural systems, international migration, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The Institute’s research is organized into 6 Research Programs:
• Biodiversity & Natural Resources
• Energy, Climate and Environment
• Population and Just Societies
• Strategic Initiatives
IIASA is frequently looking for researchers at all levels including post-doctoral fellows to join the programs. If you are interested in working at IIASA, please see here for job opportunities.
