The National Academies Press is committed to the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in alignment with our mission to deliver independent, objective, and evidence-based knowledge. We will continuously evaluate and adapt our AI use as technology and best practices evolve.
Guiding Principles
Our approach to AI is rooted in the following core principles:
Transparency: We disclose the use of generative AI in any part of the publishing process when it makes a substantive contribution to a National Academies–branded product.
Accountability: All AI-assisted content is subject to rigorous human oversight. Final decisions are made by qualified subject-matter experts and publishing professionals.
Scientific Integrity: We uphold our rigorous standards for consensus-based, peer-reviewed knowledge. AI tools are used to assist, not replace, scholarly review and authorship.
Privacy and Data Stewardship: We use AI in ways that protect individual privacy and adhere to relevant data governance and federal policies.
Bias Awareness: We remain vigilant about the potential for AI tools to reflect or introduce systemic errors, omissions, or distortions and work to mitigate these risks through careful evaluation and expert review.
Policies and Procedures
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine follow rigorous policies and procedures that uphold integrity, transparency, and public confidence in our work.
