GUIRR Meeting: Maintaining U.S. Leadership in International Standards Bodies

March 11, 2021

11:00 AM - 12:30 PM (EST)

Past

U.S. leadership and engagement in international agreements and standards-setting bodies is critical for maintaining influence on the global stage. Recent signs of China’s growing influence in the shaping of international standards – particularly on 5G standards development, which could have global implications for the future of internet governance – have policymakers concerned about the long-term impacts these bodies have on technology development, competitiveness, and foreign policy. What is the United States doing to commit to and support sustained engagement within these bodies? In which technology areas does the United States still maintain significant influence, and where is it falling behind?

During this meeting, attendees discussed the importance of U.S. influence in international standards bodies across sectors of the economy.

Speakers:
Gordon Gillerman, Director of the Standards Coordination Office at the National Institute of Standards and Technology
Ajit Jillavenkatesa, Senior Standards Policy Legal Advisor at Apple
Mindel De La Torre, Chief Regulatory and International Strategy Officer at Omnispace

This meeting is for members of the Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable and invited guests.
