Artificial intelligence (AI) has many uses in transportation, including designing bridges. TRB hosted a webinar on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 from 2:00-3:30 PM Eastern that offered insights on using AI in designing bridge foundations. Presenters evaluated design methodologies for foundations and discussed how state departments of transportation (DOTs) can utilize the practical applications of AI in transportation structures. They also discussed the Data Interchange for Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists (DIGGS), which is a data transfer protocol for geotechnical, geoenvironmental, and engineering data.
This webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Technical Committee on Foundations of Bridges and Other Structures.
The slides are linked in the meeting materials below. Click here to view the recording.
Webinar agenda and presenters
- How state DOTs can use DIGGS and AI in designing bridge foundations: Nick Machairas, Haley & Aldrich
- Ultimate pile capacity from Cone Penetration Test data: Murad Abu-Farsakh, Louisiana State University
- Question and answer session: Moderated by Sharid Amiri, California Department of Transportation
The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Explain significance of clean, organized datasets in enabling AI
- Identify opportunities where design experience can be derived from data using machine learning
- Describe the benefits of machine learning for bridge foundation design
