Introduction

On October 23 and 24, 2024, the Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the forum) held a workshop on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Health Professions Education. The workshop series was planned by a committee according to a statement of task (see Box 1-1) and included several components over a 4-month period (see Figure 1-1). The planning committee1 used input from previous activities and virtual input to inform the planning of activities. First, a preworkshop session was held on July 16, 2024, to lay a foundation for a shared understanding of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) by reviewing the history of and terms used for SOTL. At this session, a roundtable discussion was held to look at how SOTL is applied in health professional education (HPE) and explore different priorities and perspectives on SOTL. In August, information-gathering sessions (focus groups) were held to inform planning committee members about the SOTL landscape, including individual and institutional perceptions, beliefs, and attitudes about SOTL within various health professions. In September, the planning committee invited authors to share publications that demonstrate how SOTL has impacted health

BOX 1-1
Statement of Task

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a public workshop to explore the systematic study of teaching and learning and the current or potential application of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) in health professions education. Invited presentations and discussions will involve global audiences that will consider the use of SOTL in areas such as

  • Recognizing and supporting SOTL for professional development, including academic promotion and tenure within health professions education;
  • Identifying structures that motivate clinical educators and those involved in continuous professional development to attain training and competence in SOTL;
  • Using SOTL to support innovations and adjustments required for the changing academic environment and learner profiles such as competency-based education, artificial intelligence (AI), admissions needs;
  • Demonstrating health professions education impacts beyond satisfaction surveys; and
  • Exploring the science of teaching and learning.

professions in key areas. On October 23 and 24, the main workshop was held, with the goals of amplifying the value of SOTL in HPE, exploring innovations in educational research frameworks, and considering what is important for the future of teaching practice in HPE. Last, a 1-hour closing session was held on October 31; planning committee members convened to discuss what was learned at the workshop and consider motivational messages that might entice more educators to engage in SOTL.

Chapter 1 of this proceedings describes the planning methodology and objectives of the workshop, and Chapter 2 summarizes the discussions held at the preworkshop session. Chapter 3 delves into the main workshop, with presentations on the value of SOTL in HPE and innovations in SOTL, and includes reports from breakout activities. Chapter 4 summarizes the final closing session, which featured an exploration of mechanisms for individual faculty development and a discussion of how to motivate more educators to engage in SOTL. Appendixes A, B, and C contain a list of references, the breakout group figures, and the full workshop agenda, respectively. Appendix D provides links to the evidence-based research videos that authors were invited to submit before the workshop. Biographies of the workshop planning committee members and speakers are provided in Appendixes E and F, respectively. Members of the forum that hosted the workshop are listed in Appendix G.
