WASHINGTON — The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine announced today that, following a national search, Tina Bahadori will join the organization as the new executive director of its Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences on June 22, 2020.

Bahadori comes to the National Academies from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Research and Development, where for the past eight years she designed and led several transdisciplinary research and risk assessment programs.  Her positions at EPA included serving as national program director for human health risk assessment, center director of the National Center for Environmental Assessment, and national program director for chemical safety for sustainability.  Before joining EPA, Bahadori’s career was founded on nearly two decades of research and science enterprises in the private sector, where she worked on converging and diverging issues related to energy, environment, technology, and chemical management.

“Tina knows the National Academies well, having championed a number of important studies while at EPA and volunteering with us in various capacities over the last decade, including as a member of our Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology and several ad-hoc committees,” said Gregory Symmes, chief program officer of the National Academies.  “I am delighted to bring Tina on board as executive director and look forward to her applying her expertise to guide our Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences.”

Bahadori holds a doctorate in environmental science and engineering from the Harvard School of Public Health.  From the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she holds a Master of Science in chemical engineering and technology and policy, as well as Bachelor of Science degrees in chemical engineering and in humanities. She served as the president of the International Society of Exposure Science and is an associate editor of the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine are private, nonprofit institutions that provide independent, objective analysis and advice to the nation to solve complex problems and inform public policy decisions related to science, technology, and medicine. They operate under an 1863 congressional charter to the National Academy of Sciences, signed by President Lincoln.
