The Promise of Adolescence: Realizing Opportunity in Education
May 1 | Webinar
This webinar will explore recent scientific advances in our understanding of adolescent development and promising strategies for building the education system of the future. The event features remarks from two members of the expert committee that authored The Promise of Adolescence: Realizing Opportunity for All Youth.
May 5 | Workshop
This workshop on will discuss best practices in providing and supporting adolescent health services, and feature a panel of youth representatives who will share their own experiences related to mental, emotional, and behavioral health. Speakers will also discuss key findings from recent National Academies reports on youth and adolescent health.
Deaths of Despair and the Future of Capitalism
May 8 | Public Seminar
Anne Case and Angus Deaton, the authors of Deaths of Despair and the Future of Capitalism, will discuss their book and examine the proximate and underlying causes of the rise in deaths of despair.
Novel Synthetic Opioid Detection: Analytical and Other Challenges
May 11 | Webinar
Novel synthetic opioids have been linked to an increase in overdose deaths, and due to their variety and the speed at which they are introduced to the market, they are often difficult to detect and distinguish both in the field and in labs. This webinar will explore analytical and data challenges in the detection of novel synthetic opioids.
Tackling Vaccine Hesitancy and Access Issues
May 28 | Zoom Meeting
Experts will discuss why trust in vaccinations is on the decline in some communities — and what that means for public health. The virtual meeting will identify future topics to be discussed at follow-up meeting in late summer 2020.
Reports Scheduled for Release in May
Release dates for the following consensus reports and proceedings from the Academies depend on successful completion of the review process and publishing schedules. Reporters who would like to be notified when a report is due for release should contact the Office of News and Public Information (e-mail news@nas.edu) and ask to be placed on the contact list.
Compounded Topical Pain Creams: Review of Select Ingredients for Safety, Effectiveness, and Use
Every year, millions of Americans use compounded topical analgesics in the form of creams or gels as an alternative to oral pain relief medications. However, there are public health concerns around their use, because there is little available data on their safety. This report recommends research, education, and oversight priorities to support safety, effectiveness, and use of these preparations.
A Vision for NSF Earth Sciences 2020-2030: Earth in Time
Presents a vision for the next 10 years of the National Science Foundation Division of Earth Science’s research, and identifies facilities, infrastructure, computing, and workforce development needed to support that vision.
