The pace of change in automated vehicle (AV) technologies and mobility services is challenging traditional public sector transportation research methods. This webinar will discuss innovative research approaches for advancing AV technology and shared mobility practices used in the public and private sectors.
Addressing the Consequences of Cancer Treatment
Nov. 9 and 10
Cancer care can take a physical, mental, and financial toll on patients. This webinar will examine opportunities to redesign cancer care approaches to reduce short- and long-term consequences without compromising treatment effectiveness. Presentations will also discuss ways to better engage patients in treatment decision-making.
Studies on Radiation Health Effects at the Radiation Effects Research Foundation, Japan

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. With joint Japanese and American support, the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) has followed the health effects of radiation in the survivors and their offspring. This webinar will feature presentations from the RERF director and other investigators on the history of the foundation and its achievements, current research, and future directions.
Countering the U.S. Opioid Epidemic

The National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Countering the U.S. Opioid Epidemic will host a virtual symposium featuring a keynote address by Kassandra Frederique, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, on the intersection of race, addiction, and health disparities. The symposium also will include presentations and discussions about effective and innovative solutions and strategies to prevent, treat, and manage opioid use disorder and other substance use disorders.
Imagining the Future of Undergraduate STEM Education
Nov. 12-19
This symposium will explore ambitions for the future of undergraduate STEM education and how to meet the needs of students, science, and society for 2040 and beyond. The discussion will bring together innovators from colleges and universities as well as policymakers, funders, and representatives from associations and industry.
Reports Scheduled for Release in November
Release dates for the following consensus reports and proceedings from the National Academies depend on successful completion of the review process and publishing schedules. Reporters who would like to be notified when a report is due for release should contact the Office of News and Public Information (e-mail news@nas.edu) and ask to be placed on a contact list.
Leveraging Unmanned Systems for Coast Guard Missions
Unmanned systems continue to be developed and used to meet commercial and military needs. This report will assess how the U.S. Coast Guard is making use of these technological advancements and provide guidance on how best to approach future unmanned systems strategies.
