U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) President Marcia McNutt has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for her “significant contributions to the development of science and international scientific collaboration.” McNutt is receiving the honor along with Jerzy Duszyński, president of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine this past February, the U.S. NAS and the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) entered into an agreement to help Ukrainian researchers – those still in Ukraine and hundreds of others who have been forced to flee to Poland and neighboring countries -- continue their work during the war. The U.S. NAS and PAN are also serving as secretariats for a high-level international coordinating group of scientific organizations formed to take concrete steps to support Ukraine’s research community with the aim of rebuilding a successful global science and innovation system in Ukraine when the war ends.
“I am humbled to receive this honor, and I continue to be deeply inspired and impressed by the bravery of the Ukrainian people in the face of this war and its unrelenting hardships,” said NAS President Marcia McNutt. “The international scientific community remains committed to ensuring that Ukrainian science continues to thrive – for the benefit of Ukraine and for the rest of the world.”
