‘We Stand With Our Colleagues in Ukraine,’ Say U.S. National Academies Presidents

Statement

Wars and Conflicts

Last update March 3, 2022

We stand in solidarity with the scientists, engineers, health care workers, and other colleagues in the research community of Ukraine, who like all Ukrainians, are doing their best to survive and resist in the face of a horrific and unprovoked invasion.  We admire their bravery and efforts to persevere, especially health care workers who are treating the sick and wounded under unimaginable circumstances. We join an increasingly united international community in condemning the Russian invasion of its sovereign neighbor.

We are ready to assist in efforts to protect and maintain the Ukrainian research, health, and education enterprises, and to assist our colleagues and their families who are forced to flee.  In particular, we are offering our assistance to the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ukrainian medical community, and we look forward to working with science, engineering, and medical academies in neighboring nations as they confront a growing refugee crisis.  We also are ready to assist in restoring the scientific, engineering, and health care capacities that will be crucial in rebuilding Ukraine.

The U.S. National Academies have a long history of maintaining open lines of communication with the international research community, even in dire geopolitical situations.  We are committed to keeping such channels of communication open, including with Russian scientists, many of whom have spoken out against the invasion.

Even in these dark times, we are hopeful that Ukraine will remain a free and open nation where science, engineering, and medicine can once again flourish, not only for the benefit of Ukrainians but also for all of us around the world.
