Education Research Track: Early-Career Research Fellowship

For the 2025-2027 Application Cycle, the Education Research track goal focuses on contributing to the advancement of science, STEM and environmental education in the Gulf region or Alaska by considering the impacts of establishing sense of place* in formal or informal learning environments.

*Sense of place describes the wide range of connections between people and places that develops based on the place meanings and attachment a person has for a particular setting. For the purpose of this opportunity, sense of place may include research terminology such as place-based education (PBE) or learning, identity of place, placemaking, and/or pedagogy of place.

Potential fellows must ensure compliance with their institution’s requirements for applications for external funding. Funds cannot be used on institutional overhead or indirect charges. Detailed information can be found in the Early-Career Research Fellowship sample grant agreement for public and private institutions.
Research funding
$75,000 is available for the fellow to use for research-related expenses, including equipment purchases, professional travel, professional development courses, trainee support, salary, or any other costs directly related to the fellow’s research. The use of these funds for any other expenses requires pre-approval from the Gulf Research Program.
Mentor honorarium
The remaining $1,000 of the award serves as an honorarium for a mentor. Applicants must identify a senior-level researcher at their affiliated institution willing to serve as a career mentor.
Additional funding
All fellows will attend a required virtual orientation near the start of their fellowship term. Fellows may be required to attend other events/conferences during their fellowship term, which may include a fellows and/or alumni networking event.
