Global Climate and Environmental Research Fellowship
The Global Climate and Environmental Research Fellowship (GCERF) supports early- and mid-career U.S. researchers to work in collaboration with counterparts in the Global South and engage in collective research and problem solving around complex climate and environmental issues. The pilot cycle launches this fall in partnership with select institutions in India, with plans to scale up to other institutions and countries in future cycles. Fellows will have the chance to apply tools that have been developed to analyze and inform decisions related to climate and environmental sustainability in different international locations or contexts while building lasting research partnerships.

Statement of Task
Recognizing that international collaboration is essential to advancing climate and environmental research, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) will conduct a Global Climate and Environmental Research Fellowship (GCERF). The fellowship will place early- and mid-career U.S. researchers in residency at international academic and research institutions for periods ranging from 3-6 months up to one year to conduct joint research activities in climate, earth systems, and environmental fields. The purpose of the fellowship is to:
1. Elevate and sustain the careers of outstanding climate and environmental researchers by developing their capacity to engage globally and expanding access to perspectives, opportunities, and networks that strengthen their research and increase the visibility of their work;
2. Advance climate and environmental research by aligning fellow expertise with host institution priorities to support bidirectional knowledge exchange, joint exploration of key scientific questions, and development of new research directions; and
3. Foster sustained international collaboration among climate and environmental researchers and institutions in the United States and other countries through in-residence research collaborations and relationship-building across global research networks.
Fellows will be placed in leading international academic and research institutions with demonstrated excellence in climate and environmental research, a strong record of international collaboration, and the capacity to host and support U.S.-based researchers in residency. The initial cycle of the fellowship will be conducted as a pilot program, focused primarily on three host institutions in India. It will provide an opportunity to identify and develop working relationships with key host institutions, refine the fellowship process, and pave the way for scaling the fellowship across India and globally.
An advisory committee will provide guidance on program strategy, selection criteria, and implementation, recommend expert reviewers, and support cultivation of future host institutions and countries.
