Revision of "Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories": A Workshop and Virtual Town Hall

Completed

Since its publication by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1984, Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) has become the cornerstone of the practice of biosafety in the United States and in many countries around the world. Seven years after the release of the BMBL 5th Edition, NIH and CDC are considering a revision based on the comments of a broader set of stakeholders. This virtual town hall meeting was held to allow BMBL users to share their thoughts. Complete records of comments are available by request.

Description

An ad hoc committee will organize a virtual "Town Hall" meeting, followed by a 1-day workshop in Washington, DC, to provide the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with input from stakeholders on the potential revision of "Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), 5th Edition." The Town Hall meeting will consist of a public, web-based forum where members of the bio-containment laboratory community can post remarks over a six-week period for viewing and comment by colleagues and others. The agenda for the subsequent workshop will be based on the ideas raised in the Town Hall meeting. A brief summary of the presentations and discussion at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines. A record of comments from the Town Hall meeting will also be publicly available.
