An ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine has been formed to evaluate EPA's Handbook for Developing Assessments for the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS). The IRIS Handbook provides operating procedures to the scientists in the IRIS Program for developing assessments that focus on hazard identification and dose-response analyses for environmental chemicals.

The committee will hold an open session on April 16 to hear from EPA personnel about the IRIS Handbook. There will also be an opportunity for members of the public to provide comments to the committee. Please register to live stream the open session and indicate if you would like to make a comment during the session. An agenda for the session is provided.

This first public session, which will be held on February 11, is intended to hear a presentation from Jonathan Samet (Colorado School of Public Health) on Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) assessments prior to the development of the current IRIS Handbook. There will also be an opportunity for members of the public to provide comments to the committee. Details on how to join the session are forthcoming.

Note: In April, the committee is planning to hold another public session to hear from EPA personnel about the IRIS Handbook and a summary of the written public comments on the handbook that were submitted to EPA's docket. See the notice in the Federal Register Vol. 85, No. 230; November 30, 2020; 76566 - 76567. There will also be an opportunity for the public to provide comments to the committee during that April session. Additional details are forthcoming.
