The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine invites you to a public release webinar of a new report on Friday, June 16, 2023 from 2:00 - 3:00 PM ET. The report, Building Confidence in New Evidence Streams for Human Health Risk Assessment: Lessons Learned from Laboratory Mammalian Toxicity Tests, reviews the variability and relevance of existing mammalian toxicity tests, specifically when it comes to human health risk assessment. It also provides findings for data-driven and science-based expectations for New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) based on the traditional toxicity testing models.

Members of the report authoring committee will share key takeaways and have an opportunity to answer audience questions. The full report will be available for free download from the National Academies Press at 11am on Friday, June 16th.

MEETING OVERVIEW

Animal testing is often used to evaluate the potential risks, uses, and environmental impacts of chemicals. New Approach Methods (NAMs) are technologies and approaches (including computational modeling, in vitro assays, and testing using alternative animal species) that can inform hazard and risk assessment decisions without the use of animal testing.

This one-day virtual workshop will address the committee’s charge and inform the consensus report by addressing elements of a scientific confidence framework for NAMs pertinent to risk assessment. A case study approach will be used to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of traditional and non-traditional approaches and methods. Experts from academia, industry, the government, and other organizations will explore and discuss key cross-cutting themes including: public health goals and risk assessment issues; variability and concordance; in vivo and in vitro adversity; and data for benchmarking new approach methods.

All presentations were pre-recorded and will be made available via the event webpage for viewing before the workshop. Presentations will be briefly summarized during the live discussions.

Animal testing is often used to evaluate the potential risks, uses, and environmental impacts of chemicals. New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) are technologies and approaches that can potentially provide the same hazard and risk assessment information without the use of animal testing.

This one-day virtual workshop will address critical questions: How are traditional toxicity studies used in informing chemical safety decisions? What do we know about the variability and concordance of traditional mammalian toxicity studies? What are the needs and expectations of different stakeholders? Experts from academia, industry, the government, and other organizations will explore and discuss these issues and current scientific knowledge with regard to traditional toxicity studies.

This workshop will take place on Thursday, December 9 from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM (ET). This workshop is public and free to attend.

All presentations were pre-recorded and will be made available on this webpage for viewing before the workshop. Presentations will be briefly summarized during the live discussions.

There will be a brief comment period for members of the public/stakeholders to comment on the committee’s task (2 minute maximum per commenter; preferably one speaker per organization). Members of the public who wish to be heard during the public comment period, should elect to do so when prompted during registration. Alternatively, if unable to comment due to time constraints all are welcome to send their comments or any written materials via e-mail to kguyton@nas.edu by 5:00 pm Eastern on December 8, 2021.
