Message From The U.S. National Committee For The Ocean Decade - Ocean Decade U.S. Fall Meeting 2021

The U.S. National Committee for the UN Ocean Decade for Sustainable Development convened a public virtual meeting on November 12, 2021. The Committee heard from representatives from the U.N. Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and Dr. Jane Lubchenco, Deputy Director for Climate and Environment at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). The Committee also heard from the co-chairs of the Subcommittee on Ocean Science and Technology – Amanda Netburn (OSTP); Terry Quinn (NSF); Craig McLean (NOAA); and Tom Drake (ONR). Members of the Cross-Cutting Themes for U.S. Contributions to the Ocean Decade committee gave presentations on the draft themes identified to address compelling areas for public and private sector investment and provide opportunities for inter- and multi-disciplinary activities in support of ocean science. Comments from Dr. Lubchenco indicated clear support from the Administration for the draft Themes while also underscoring the need to identify concrete outcomes and the transformative science needed to reach them. The Committee on Cross-Cutting Themes is now incorporating suggestions and comments received during the public comment period into a report that will be completed and released early in 2022.

Message from the U.S. National Committee for the Ocean Decade - Draft Cross-Cutting Themes for U.S. Contributions to the Ocean Decade

The federal agencies represented on the Subcommittee on Ocean Science and Technology (SOST) asked the U.S. National Committee for the Ocean Decade to identify several cross-cutting themes that encompass the most promising and innovative research concepts of the submitted Ocean-Shots, demonstrating their alignment with the goals of the UN Ocean Decade, UN-endorsed Decade activities, and with U.S. ocean priorities. The results of the initial deliberations are presented as four topical themes and two foundational themes that offer the opportunity for bold, creative, and audacious new ways to advance ocean science in support of sustainable development. These themes are not meant to encompass every important topic of ocean research; instead, they represent a subset of promising areas selected to inspire additional investment during the Ocean Decade. At this point, the Committee seeks community input on the nature and breadth of these themes. Comments will inform revisions of the themes and preparation of a report that will be presented to the SOST and the public, as well as published online at the National Academies Press. Comments will be shared with the committee and will be available upon request to The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Public Access Record Office. Submit comments by Friday, November 19, 2021.

UN Ocean Decade - Ocean Decade at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26)

The Ocean Decade provides a framework that convenes across geographies, across scales, and across disciplines to co-design and co-deliver the knowledge needed to fill critical knowledge gaps and develop ocean-based solutions to meet planetary challenges such as climate change. Generation and use of such knowledge will require a robust enabling environment with adequate resources, capacity, and access to data and information. OCEAN DECADE LABORATORIES - A Clean Ocean

Our third Ocean Decade Laboratory will be held from 17 to 19 November 2021 and will offer valuable insights and talks around the Ocean Decade Outcome: “A Clean Ocean”. Topics will cover aspects like marine pollution, clean-up, recycling, plastic management, underwater anthropogenic noise or deep-sea research, and lots more! Nexus Member News - Esri Colleagues Have Published a New Open Access Paper in the Journal Oceanography Titled: A Global Ecological Classification of Coastal Segment Units to Complement Marine Biodiversity Observation Network Assessments

Every 1 kilometer stretch of coastline on Earth can be queried for 11 variables: chlorophyll a concentration, tidal range, wave height, turbidity, marine physical environment (a composite measure of sea surface temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen.). These variables characterize the waterside, landside, and coastline properties. This resource is brought to you by Esri, the USGS, and a team of international experts. Nexus Member News - New Round of Improvements for Data Explorer

The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) continues to receive and act upon users' input on how to improve its data access and visualization tool, Data Explorer. OOI launched the second round of improvements that makes more OOI data accessible online, adds new features for gliders and profilers, and makes cruise data searchable. Nexus Member News - FUGRO Commits Geo-Data Expertise and Experience to UN Ocean Decade Under New Partnership Agreement

Fugro has signed a partnership agreement with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (IOC-UNESCO) to improve the coordination of and access to global ocean science data. The partnership will directly support the Ocean Decade, with Fugro providing the IOC-UNESCO Secretariat in Paris, France, with experts to help establish and administer two key ocean science data working groups: the Ocean Decade Data Coordination Platform and the Private Sector Geo-data Working Group. Message from the U.S. National Committee for the Ocean Decade - Cross-Cutting Themes for U.S. Contributions to the Ocean Decade

The committee will examine how each theme aligns with the overall goal of the UN Ocean Decade in supporting ocean science for sustainable development with potential for generating future UN Decade Programmes. In addition, the committee will connect the themes to U.S. ocean priorities, as identified in documents such as identified in the National Science and Technology Council, Subcommittee on Ocean Science and Technology document, Science and Technology for America's Oceans: A Decadal Vision (2018). The themes identified by the committee will address compelling areas for public and private sector investment and provide opportunities for inter- and multi-disciplinary activities in support of ocean science. Updates on this new consensus study will be posted on the ocean decade website.

A Virtual Seminar Series for the Northwest Atlantic - We're All in the Same Boat: Exploring Shared Challenges & Mutual Solutions

This fall Ocean Decade U.S. Nexus Member Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems (NERACOOS) and the Canadian Integrated Ocean Observing System (CIOOS) Atlantic are hosting a three-part webinar series featuring diverse perspectives on scientific, economic, and policy issues facing coastal communities. The series will serve as the launch event for the Integrated Ocean Observing Across the Northwest Atlantic Ocean-Shot and coincide with the voyage of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy. During the second installment, it will also feature Larry Mayer as both Chief Scientist during the Healy Northwest Passage transit and Chair of the U.S. National Committee of the Ocean Decade. UN Ocean Decade Actions - The first endorsed Decade Actions following Call for Decade Actions No. 01/2020

On June 8, 2021, UNESCO announced the first Ocean Decade Actions to drive the ocean knowledge revolution. More than 60 programmes and contributions, in topics ranging from restoring the Great Barrier Reef to mapping 100% of the ocean floor in high resolution, have been endorsed. Call for Decade Actions No. 10/2025

The UN Ocean Decade has opened their call for Decade Actions No. 10/2025 which will run through January 31, 2026. This call for actions stems from the Barcelona Statement and is open to initiatives that enhance the science-policy-society nexus for evidence-based decision making. This tenth call of the series consists of three parts: Expression of Interest for Decade Programmes; application for Decade Projects; and applications for Ocean Decade Contributions.

Each part of the Call has its own submission form and deadline. For information and relevant dates please see the Call for Decade Actions webpage.
