Randy W. Schekman

Dr. Randy Schekman is a Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, University of California, Berkeley, and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He was a PhD graduate with Arthur Kornberg at Stanford University. His current interest in cellular membranes developed during a postdoctoral period with S. J. Singer at the UC Diego. Among his awards are the Gairdner International Award, the Albert Lasker Award in Basic Medical Research and the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Schekman was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the Royal Society of London, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. He served as the Editor of the Annual Reviews of Cell and Developmental Biology and as Editor-in-Chief of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and as the founding editor of eLife. Schekman currently leads an effort supported by the Sergey Brin Family Foundation to identify and support basic research on the mechanisms of Parkinson’s Disease initiation and progression (https://parkinsonsroadmap.org). Schekman’s laboratory investigates the mechanism of vesicular traffic in the secretory pathway in eukaryotic cells. Currently the lab investigates the mechanism of biogenesis of extracellular vesicles including how small RNAs are sorted for secretion in exosomes and the means by which these vesicles are internalized and function in target cells.

Mark Barnes

Mark Barnes is a partner at Ropes & Gray in Boston, where he represents universities and academic medical centers in matters related to scientific research, including research misconduct, research grants and contracts, and human and animal research. Since 2015, he has taught health care law, public health law and the law of biomedical research at Yale Law School, and from 2008 to 2015 taught the same subjects at Harvard Law School. In 2011, he co-founded, and still serves as co-director of, the Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard, an applied policy center focused on improving the planning, design and conduct of multi-national clinical trials. In all of these capacities, and for many years, he has published widely in the legal and scientific literature on issues related to health care law, public health, occupational health, antidiscrimination law, and research misconduct. Mark previously has served as associate commissioner for medical and and legal affairs at the New York City Department of Health; HIV policy director for the New York State AIDS Institute; executive director and founder of the Harvard’s HIV/AIDS treatment programs in Nigeria, Tanzania and Botswana; senior associate provost for research at Harvard; acting director of the Harvard Primate Center (New England Primate Research Center); EVP of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; and at present, the acting research integrity officer for MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Dorothy Bishop

Dorothy Bishop retired as Professor of Developmental Neuropsychology at the University of Oxford in 2022, where since 1998 she conducted full-time research, funded by Wellcome Trust and ERC (Orcid ID: 0000-0002-2448-4033). Previously she was funded by the Medical Research Council at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, Cambridge, UK. She is a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and the British Academy, serving as Section Chair for the latter for three years. She resigned as a Fellow of the Royal Society in November 2024. She has Honorary Doctorates from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, University of Liège, École Normale Supérieure, Paris, the University of Western Australia and Lund University, Sweden. She holds an honorary fellowship at St John’s College, Oxford. From 2011-2014 she was Co-chair of the Wellcome Trust Investigator Awards Expert Review Group, Cognitive Neuroscience and Mental Health. She has substantial editorial experience, notably at the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry where she served as co-editor and then editor-in chief from 1990-1997. She has published substantial books and papers on the nature and causes of developmental language disorder, focusing on psycholinguistics, neurobiology and genetics. Beyond psychology, she is active in the field of open science and research reproducibility.

Chris Bourg

Chris Bourg is the Director of Libraries at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and founding director of the Center for Research on Equitable and Open Scholarship (CREOS). Prior to joining MIT, Chris held several leadership positions in the Stanford University Libraries. Chris also served as an active-duty Army officer for 10 years, including 3 years on the faculty of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Chris has extensive experience promoting equitable and open scholarship and is an advocate for the role of libraries in promoting social justice and democracy. Chris co-chaired the MIT Ad Hoc Task Force on the Future of Libraries and the MIT Ad Hoc Task Force on Open Access to MIT’s Research. She is also a member of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) Roundtable on Aligning Incentives for Open Science, a member of HELIOS Open, and a member of the steering committees for SPARC and for the Stanford Data Science Center for Open and Reproducible Science (SDS-CORES). Chris holds a PhD in Sociology from Stanford University, an MA in sociology from the University of Maryland, and a Bachelor’s degree in sociology from Duke University.

Nancy Chescheir

Nancy Chescheir is an emeritus professor in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine. She has served as Department Chair at Vanderbilt and Acting Chair at UNC. She was the Editor-in-Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 2012-2020 and founding editor of Reproductive, Female and Child Medicine. She serves on COPE Council and Trustee board and will be the Chair of COPE starting in May, 2025 after four years as Vice Chair. She received the Distinguished Service Award from the NC Ob Gyn Society and ACOG Hall of Fame award. She served as the program scientist at the NICHD for the Management of Myelomeningocele Study (MOMS), a randomized controlled study of maternal-fetal surgery for fetal spina bifida. Her medical practice was in the field of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. In addition to her clinical and editorial work, she helped to open the Bokamoso Private Hospital in Gaborone, Ethiopia. As part of her editorial work, she worked with the Ethiopian women’s health journal to establish effective, ethical publication processes.

Susan Garfinkel

Dr. Garfinkel is the owner of Research Integrity Partners, offering support to institutions and Research Integrity Officers in managing research misconduct and integrity issues, as well as assisting editors and publishers with publication ethics challenges. Formerly, she held the role of Associate Vice President for Research Compliance at The Ohio State University, where she managed research misconduct, assisted in coordinating institution-wide research compliance policies and procedures, ensured the university’s compliance with federal and state regulations, and fostered ethical research practices. Previously, she served as the Director for the Division of Investigative Oversight at the U.S. Office of Research Integrity responsible for the oversight of research misconduct nationally and internationally. Dr. Garfinkel also was Director of Research Grants for a non-profit organization that funded research in age-related degenerative diseases and stem cell research, and Program Officer at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health. She has been faculty for conferences to train State and Federal court judges on molecular biology technologies, is a founding member of the Asian Pacific Rim Research Integrity network (APRI), and a Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Board of Trustee member.

Robert Harington

Robert Harington is the Chief Publishing Officer at the American Mathematical Society (AMS). Robert has the overall responsibility for the publishing at the AMS, including books, journals and electronic products. Robert is a "Chef" for The Scholarly Kitchen Blog and a current board member of the International Association of Scientific, Technical, and Medical Publishers (STM). Robert has worked in non-profit and commercial settings, internationally, with particular experience across the United States, Europe, and Asia (focus on China and Japan). Robert holds a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Oxford, and a first-class honors degree in chemistry from the University of London.

Renee Hoch

Renee is the Managing Editor of the Public Library of Science (PLOS) Publication Ethics team and is based in Davis, CA. She has a BS in Biological Sciences (Stanford University), a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology (University of Washington), and conducted postdoctoral research in developmental genetics, cell signaling, and neuroscience (Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and University of California, San Francisco). She has worked in open access publishing since 2014, as a staff editor and then publication ethics lead for PLOS One (2014-2017), and subsequently leading the PLOS Publication Ethics team (2018-present). She drives PLOS’ publication ethics strategy, leads PLOS’ efforts to prevent and respond to integrity issues, and develops PLOS’ integrity policies, including those on correction of the published record. Renee has been a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) for >8 years, is a member of COPE Council, and has contributed to several cross-industry projects, including to develop guidance for addressing large-scale paper mill cases (COPE), research data ethics issues (FORCE11), and improving corrections to the literature in response to paper mills (United2Act). Renee speaks regularly at international conferences, has delivered university lectures on publication ethics, and has authored research articles as well as editorials and blog posts discussing integrity issues.

Francis Kombe

Francis Kombe is the CEO of EthiXPERT. He is a Public Health and community engagement practitioner and bioethicist, with a passion in Research Integrity. He has a wealth of experience working in international health research institutions, where he has held various leadership positions. Kombe holds an MSocSc (research ethics) from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), South Africa; Master of Public Health (MPH) and Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health (PGDPH) from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine-UK (LSHTM) and is currently pursuing a Wellcome Trust funded PhD in bioethics at UKZN. Before joining EthiXPERT, Kombe worked as a training coordinator at the KWTRP where he was involved in the strategic development and planning of health research fieldworkers. He is a co-founder and chairperson of the African Research Integrity Network (ARIN). He served as a member of the planning committee for the 6th and 7th World Conference on Research Integrity held in Hong Kong and Cape Town respectively. He has published widely in the field of community engagement, frontline staff, research integrity, fair study benefits and informed consent, among others.

Erin Rothwell

Dr. Erin Rothwell received her B.S. degree in Recreation Therapy and M.S. degree in Park & Recreation Management from the University of South Alabama. In 2004, Dr. Rothwell moved to Salt Lake City to pursue her PhD in Recreation Therapy at the University of Utah. She served her Postdoctoral Training in the College of Nursing at the U while studying clinical trials and public health. In 2010, Dr. Rothwell received a competitive fellowship opportunity in the Medical College of Wisconsin where she studied Bioethics. Dr. Rothwell’s research focus is on ethical, social, and legal implications of genetic and technological advancements on individuals and families specifically within newborn screening, prenatal testing, and biobanking. She served as principal investigator for the National Institutes of Health Utah Center in Excellence for Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) for Research in Genetics (1RM1HG009037), and is the principal investigator on an R01 titled: Comparing Game Facilitated Interactivity to Genetic Counseling for Prenatal Screening Education (R01 HG011921) and an R01 titled: Implementing a Novel Consent Process for Biospecimen Research after Newborn Screening in Hospitals Serving Diverse Patients?(R01HD082148). Dr. Rothwell also has extensive expertise on informed consent and research ethics.

Jodi Schneider

Dr. Jodi Schneider is Associate Professor of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she directs the Information Quality Lab. She is affiliated with University of Wisconsin Madison's Information School, University of Illinois Chicago Department of Psychiatry, and University of Pittsburgh Department of Biomedical Informatics. Since 2020, Dr. Schneider has led the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation-funded project Reducing the Inadvertent Spread of Retracted Science. She served on the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) Communication of Retractions, Removals, and Expressions of Concern Working Group (CREC), which led to the NISO CREC Recommended Practice (June 2024) which she stewards as a member of the NISO CREC Standing Committee. Dr. Schneider studies the science of science through the lens of arguments, evidence, and persuasion. Her long-term goal is ensuring public policy decisions can apply the best available scientific evidence. Her work has been funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, European Commission, Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Institutes of Health, Office of Research Integrity, Science Foundation Ireland, Harvard Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, and an NSF CAREER award. Dr. Schneider completed her PhD in informatics at the National University of Ireland ("Enabling reuse of arguments and opinions from online social disputes"), Galway and has degrees in library & information science (M.S. UIUC), mathematics (M.A. UT-Austin), and liberal arts (B.A., Great Books, St. John's College).

Brandon Stell

Brandon Stell is a neuroscientist with the CNRS in Paris, France. His research explores how the brain coordinates and adapts movement in response to a changing environment. He earned his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Colorado and completed his PhD in 2005 at UCLA, where he trained with Istvan Mody. After his doctoral work, he moved to Paris as a postdoctoral researcher and has held a permanent position with the CNRS since 2014.

In 2012, in his spare time, he co-founded PubPeer, a website dedicated to the community-based evaluation of scientific publications, which he now runs with fellow CNRS researcher Boris Barbour. Together, they also lead the nonprofit PubPeer Foundation, which supports the platform. This work is carried out independently of their CNRS roles.

H. H. Thorp

Holden Thorp became Editor-in-Chief of the Science family of journals on 28 October 2019. He came to Science from Washington University, where he was provost from 2013 to 2019 and professor from 2013 to 2023. He is currently a professor at George Washington University and on leave to serve as the Editor-in-Chief at Science. Thorp cofounded Viamet Pharmaceuticals, which developed VIVJOA (oteseconazole), now approved by the FDA and marketed by Mycovia Pharmaceuticals. Thorp is a venture partner at Hatteras Venture Partners, a consultant to Ancora, Huron, and Urban Impact Advisors, and is on the board of directors of PBS and Saint Louis University. He serves on the scientific advisory boards of the Yale School of Medicine and the Underwriters’ Laboratories Research Institutes.

A committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will conduct a consensus study that will seek to upgrade the scientific literature by recommending improvements to the processes used to correct errors in scientific articles, including editorial expressions of concern, errata, corrigendum, retractions, and other actions. The committee will examine international practices, as the scientific research enterprise is global. This session will provide a platform for experts and stakeholders across the South America Region to share perspectives on the challenges, barriers, innovations, and promising practices related to strengthening the correction of the scientific record.

The session will take place virtually on Friday, November 5, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM (U.S. Eastern Standard Time, Washington, DC). Register to participate in the session, receive updates, and a notification of the report release expected in winter 2025.
