Topics
Scientific knowledge builds and expands on previous scientific results. Publication of peer-reviewed scientific articles is the process by which results are shared with the scientific community and others. The advancement of scientific knowledge relies on the accuracy of the findings reported in the scientific literature. Ideally, when errors are identified in a published article, corrections would be quickly and transparently addressed and resolved. This consensus study will recommend improvements to the processes used to correct errors in scientific articles. The study committee will examine international practices, as the scientific research enterprise is global.

Description
A committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will conduct a consensus study that will seek to upgrade the scientific literature by recommending improvements to the processes used to correct errors in scientific articles, including editorial expressions of concern, errata, corrigendum, retractions, and other actions. The committee will examine international practices, as the scientific research enterprise is global.
The committee will:
(1) Review and summarize current international practices and guidelines for correcting the scientific literature by outlining the types of institutions and entities, rules and regulations, and actions involved in the process of identifying, correcting and, if necessary, retracting a scientific article;
(2) Identify incentive structures for institutions and entities that could result in higher quality publications, including self-correction and timely correction of published and pre-published literature; and
(3) Propose mechanisms, criteria, and standards to improve the timelines, notifications, transparency, and consistency of corrections to scientific publications.
The committee will issue a consensus report with findings and recommendations.
