Emerging and disruptive technologies have the potential to provide transformative benefits to the transportation system; however, they are accompanied by a long list of potential challenges for state, regional, and local transportation agencies. One such challenge is to find, train, and retain a workforce that has the ability to efficiently and effectively leverage the value of emerging technologies to improve the safety and efficiency of the nation’s transportation systems. To address this challenge, TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program developed NCHRP Research Report 1174: Preparing the Transportation Workforce for Emerging Technologies: A Guide, which addresses recruitment, development, and retention of a workforce proficient in developing and deploying complex emerging technology.
NCHRP Web-Only Document 445: Preparing the Transportation Workforce for Emerging Technologies: Developing a Guide describe the phases of the project that resulted in NCHRP Research Report 1174. The Web-Only Document provides background on the need for the work, the project’s research approach and methods, a workforce gap analysis, an overview of NCHRP Research Report 1174, and additional opportunities for resource development to advance the transportation workforce in the face of emerging technologies.
