Appendix A
STATEMENT OF TASK

The Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate will convene a workshop and subsequently produce a report that articulates the fundamental elements that are required in the delivery of climate services. The audiences for this study are those federal, academic, and private individuals and organizations that are currently providing or are capable of providing climate information on all time scales. This study will:

  • Define climate services.

  • Describe potential audiences and providers of climate services.

  • Describe the types of products that should be provided through a climate service.

  • Outline the roles of the public, private, and academic sectors in a climate service.

  • Describe fundamental principles that should be followed in the provision of climate services.

The workshop will include a broad array of both providers and users of climate information. An informal discussion paper that outlines fundamental issues concerning the provision of climate services will be prepared in advance of the meeting.
