Statement of Task

The Computer Science and Telecommunications Board (CSTB) will convene an expert committee to provide a comprehensive assessment of biometrics that examines current capabilities, future possibilities, and the role of government in their development. This project will build on CSTB’s recent project on authentication technologies and privacy. It would explore the technical and policy challenges associated with the development, evaluation, and use of biometric technologies and the systems that incorporate them. It would examine associated research challenges and identify a multi- and interdisciplinary research agenda to begin to meet them. Multiple stakeholders and points of view on multiple technologies, applications, and implementation issues would be examined as part of the study. International perspectives and considerations would be explored as well. Throughout the study, inputs would be gathered through testimony and written material on the challenges, capabilities, and requirements of biometric systems as well as related policy and social questions.
