How to Access Free Publications
All National Academies’ publications are available free of charge as downloadable, searchable, and printable PDFs. Please direct others to our publications page rather than forwarding files or posting them to your website.
Download a Free PDF
Create an account using the “My Academies” icon at the top right of any page to streamline your access. If you prefer, you can continue as a guest. Your information will not be shared with external organizations.
Once you are logged in or continuing as a guest, visit our publications section and search for your publication by title or subject. Click on the title, scroll down, and click “Download Free PDF” to begin your download.
Request Desk Copies
If you have decided to use a National Academies Press book as a text in your classroom, you may be entitled to a free desk copy for teaching purposes.
For a complimentary desk copy, you or your bookstore must place an order for at least 10 copies of the book. We must receive and fulfill this order before we can ship your free copy. If your bookstore is unable to place an order for the minimum required amount of 10 copies, we can extend a special 30% discount off the current list price to the professor teaching the class.
In order to place your desk copy request, please email Customer Service with the following information:
Professor's name
College/university name
Course name, number, semester, and estimated enrollment
Complete shipping address
Title and ISBN of the book
Name of the bookstore through which the classroom order was placed
A phone number, fax number, or email address we can use to contact you
Request a Printed Copy
Congressional staffers, members of Congress, and U.S. government employees may request complimentary printed copies by emailing ocga@nas.edu with the following information:
Contact information: Requester name, Office or Agency, Title, Email Address, Phone Number, Street Address
Report information: Title, ISBN (if known)
Due to budget constraints, quantities are limited. Your information will not be shared with any office or organization.
