The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Environmental Health Matters Initiative organized a webinar series to explore human exposure to and related health effects of microplastics in the environment.

The first webinar promoted awareness and provide a standard baseline understanding of microplastics' critical characteristics and associated future research direction. Specifically, speakers and panelists highlighted best practices and considerations for the collection, measurement, and characterization of microplastics in different media. They also explored the latest scientific findings that could enhance the comparability, reproducibility, and transparency of future microplastic research, providing crucial insights to inform downstream decision-making.

The webinar featured two presentations from Jeanne Hankett (BASF Corporation) and Imari Walker-Franklin (RTI International) followed by a multisectoral panel discussion between the speakers and Alessio Gomiero (NORCE Microplastics Center) and Leah Thornton Hampton (Southern California Coastal Water Research Project).

This event is only open to the public in a virtual capcity on Wednesday, February 12th, 2025, beginning at 10:00 AM MST. The Tuesday session is not open to attend. We apologize for the confusion.
This open session will facilitate discussion with Tribal members local to Denver, Colorado and surrounding areas on key cross-cutting themes pertinent to cumulative impacts assessment. Organized with input from the committee’s community and tribal liaison group, the session aims to amplify local Tribal voices by inviting members to share their lived experiences on topics relevant to the committee’s charge. Two small group exercises will be organized to: 1) learn about the stressors that impact community members; and 2) explore a future vision of improved community health and well-being.

The open session will be livestreamed on the event webpage, where public comments will be received in writing via the SLIDO widget. Please be aware that by submitting a public comment, you consent to your submission being used as a point of reference and/or example by the Committee in their deliberations, as well as being recorded and/or used by NASEM in any publication and/or media now known or hereafter devised in perpetuity, and you release The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine from any liability due to such usages.
