A planning committee established by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a virtual or in person public workshop over 2-3 days to discuss advances in data analytics, AI, computational materials science, thermodynamic property prediction/data bases and autonomously operated synthesis, testing, and characterization techniques that are soon likely to reach, a point where the autonomous design of a material is feasible. It will discuss where the weak links are in future systems that will reduce, and eventually eliminate, the need for human intervention in the design and manufacture of materials for target applications of DoD and to discuss approaches to the following topics: 1) Recent global developments in the application of autonomy to materials science and manufacturing; 2) Unsolved challenges for autonomous material property prediction; and 3) Emerging needs for robotic tools for accelerated materials synthesis, characterization and testing. The planning committee will also consider additional areas close to and in line with the ones mentioned above when developing the workshop agenda and selecting and inviting speakers and discussants.

This workshop will bring together researchers from the fields of materials science, condensed matter theory, computational materials science, data informatics/machine learning, in-situ sensing/in-operando measurement, AI, and robotics and defense community researchers and mangers. In addressing these topics, the workshop will also, a) Bring together experts from diverse fields, such as biology based materials science, to focus on the emerging opportunity to expand the use of autonomy throughout materials science and accelerate its engineering application; b) Build connections between materials researchers, equipment developers and the robotics communities; and c) Raise the awareness amongst defense community engineers and scientists of target research areas with a high likelihood of driving transformative future technologies. The committee will use a mix of individual presentations, panels, and question-and-answer sessions to develop an understanding of the relevant issues. A proceedings-in-brief of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
