Methods for Enhancing Additive Manufacturing Qualification and Certification for Defense Applications: A Workshop

Recently completed

A committee-supported project or activity that has been completed and for which output dissemination has begun. Its committee has been disbanded and closeout procedures are underway.

A one day in person workshop will be held to examine a set of topics that focus on defense specific considerations. Sessions will cover the current state of the art approaches that enhance predictive accuracy in metallic additive manufacturing and post-additive processes (including innovations in process, control, and inspection). The workshop will also address recent advances in use of statistics, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning that have the potential to aid automated procedures, uncertainty quantification, and qualification and certification of new technologies.

This workshop has been rescheduled for May 29-30.

Description

A planning committee appointed by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a workshop to examine the following topics with a focus on defense specific considerations:
1. Current state of the art approaches that enhance predictive accuracy in metallic additive manufacturing and post-additive processes, including innovations in process, control, and inspection.
2. Recent advances in use of statistics, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning that have the potential to aid automated procedures, uncertainty quantification, and qualification and certification of new technologies. Trusted AI and commercial application for certification/use of tools will be discussed.
3. Based on the outcome of (1) and (2), what are the gaps associated with a rapid advance of additive manufacturing material qualification and part certification.
One or more rapporteurs who are not members of the committee will be designated to prepare a workshop proceedings in brief.
