The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Environmental Health Matters Initiative organized a webinar series to explore human exposure to and related health effects of microplastics in the environment.

The fourth and final webinar in the series aimed to inform the public about emerging science, policy responses, and public communication strategies surrounding microplastics and human health. With growing evidence of widespread exposure and ongoing uncertainty about health impacts, this discussion explored key research gaps and opportunities, examined past, present, and potential mitigation efforts, and discussed how risk communication can be used to support informed decisions in the face of scientific uncertainty. Through three sessions focused on science, solutions, and communication, the webinar identified the next steps for research, policymaking, and public engagement.

The webinar featured presentations and remarks from Katrina S. Korfmacher (University of Rochester), Winnie Lau (The Pew Charitable Trusts), Sylvie Lemoine (The European Chemical Industry Council), Sherri Mason “Sam” (Gannon University), Sabine Pahl (University of Vienna), and Raymond Pieters (Utrecht University).

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Environmental Health Matters Initiative organized a webinar series to explore human exposure to and related health effects of microplastics in the environment.

The third webinar in the series aimed to inform the public and the scientific research community about the potential hazards associated with microplastics, drawing on documented studies and scientific evidence. It explored the harmful characteristics that researchers and stakeholders may consider in future studies.

Additionally, speakers discussed established methodologies for risk assessment while examining the complexities, uncertainties, and challenges involved in evaluating risks. This webinar aimed to lay a foundation for the development of a comprehensive and standardized framework for assessing microplastic-related risks, which can inform research priorities and downstream decision-making.
The webinar featured presentations from Todd Gouin (TG Environmental Research), Philip Landrigan (Boston College), and Stephanie Wright (Imperial College London), followed by a multisectoral panel discussion between the speakers and Valerie Hanley (California Department of Toxic Substances Control).

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Environmental Health Matters Initiative organized a webinar series to explore human exposure to and related health effects of microplastics in the environment.

The second webinar of the Microplastics & Health webinar series aimed to promote awareness and provide a standard baseline understanding of microplastics' distribution in the environment and the most prevalent sources or hotspots of human exposure. Specifically, speakers and panelists highlighted the major exposure pathways (e.g., inhalation, ingestion, dermal contact) and identified which pathways pose the highest risk to human health. The goal was to bridge scientific findings with policy and regulatory frameworks by identifying data gaps, research priorities, and regulatory strategies that can mitigate microplastic exposure and inform downstream decision-making.

The webinar featured presentations from Bart Koelmans (Wageningen University) and Tracey Woodruff (University of California, San Francisco) followed by a multisectoral panel discussion between the speakers and Matthew MacLeod (Stockholm University) and Jane Muncke (Food Packaging Forum).

Accountable Communities for Health (ACHs) and related multi-sector, community-driven partnerships brought together health care, public health, social services, other sectors, and residents to address unmet health and social needs at both individual and community levels. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recently released the report, Ending Unequal Treatment: Strategies to Achieve Equitable Health Care and Optimal Health for All, which underscored the importance of partnerships like these—citing cross-sector partnerships as a key societal force impacting health and wellbeing. This webinar, co-hosted with the Funders Forum on Accountable Health at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, featured lessons on what it took to successfully discuss social and structural drivers of health within communities, as well as key programmatic and policy lessons from around the country from the work of community-driven, multi-sector efforts addressing these issues on the ground.

Many states have been moving toward the legalization of cannabis and cannabis products, but the public health implications of these policy changes have not been fully evaluated. An expert committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine wrote a report to describe cannabis and cannabinoid availability in the U.S., assess regulatory frameworks for the cannabis industry using a health equity lens, and describe strengths and weaknesses of medical and non-medical surveillance systems.

Community Wastewater-based Infectious Disease Surveillance Phase 2: Report Release Webinar

Over 80 percent of U.S. households are connected to municipal wastewater collection systems, which contain the biological waste, including discharged pathogens, of the human populations they serve. Wastewater surveillance can be used to changing levels of a pathogen or identify newly emergent variants in a community. The National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS) was launched by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and is now being used to detect other infectious diseases, such as Mpox.
A Phase 1 report released in early 2023 examined the usefulness of the NWSS beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, described the value of a robust national wastewater surveillance system, and provided recommendations to increase the public health impact of such a system. A new Phase 2 report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine examines the technical constraints and opportunities to improve wastewater surveillance for the prevention and control of infectious diseases in the U.S. Join us for our report release webinar, featuring key messages and recommendations from the report.

Thank you for joining us for an interactive discussion on human exposure to and related health effects of microplastics in the environment

This event was organized by the Environmental Health Matters Initiative in collaboration with the Roundtable on Plastics.

Microplastics are small pieces of plastic less than five millimeters long and have a variety of sources, including from the breakdown of larger plastic products, personal care products, and industrial processes. They are persistent in the environment and contribute to soil, land, and water pollution. Recent studies have detected microplastics in many human tissues and have been linked to systemic health effects such as inflammation and other health issues, but how dangerous they are still lacks evidence-based answers. This webinar is intended to provide a baseline of information on microplastics, the concerns, how complex this issue is, and our starting point for assessing human health risks.

A moderated discussion between Margaret Spring (Monterey Bay Aquarium) and Robert Ellis-Hutchings (The Dow Chemical Company) covered what we know about microplastics and their health implications. This conversation was followed by a multisectoral panel discussion with Susanne Brander (Oregon State University) Imari Walker-Franklin (RTI International), Anil Patri (FDA), and Scott Coffin (CA OEHHA). This conversation brought to bear what has been tried worldwide, successfully or not, the lessons to draw upon, and the path forward to bridging research gaps in science and data to inform hazard, exposure, and health risks from microplastics.

The Environmental Health Matters Initiative is a forum that aims to equitably improve the health of all people through evidence-based solutions to environmental health issues. This is the second in a series of webinars co-hosted by the National Academies Roundtable on Population Health Improvement and the Funders Forum on Accountable Health at George Washington University Milken School of Public Health. The recording for the first webinar is available here.

Intermediary organizations, such as those serving as the backbone for accountable communities of health (ACHs), have played a key role in supporting the multi-sector relationships, infrastructure, and capacity necessary to scale and sustain health-related social needs (HRSN) and social determinants of health (SDOH) efforts. The value that multisector organizations bring to these efforts can be demonstrated along a continuum – from return on investment (ROI) for supporting the delivery of HRSN services (short term), to demonstrating the value of investments in community capacity needed to ensure meaningful and sufficient linkages to services (medium term), to making the case for these multi-sector partnerships as civic assets (long term). It is at this latter end of the continuum that ACHs can ultimately drive systems change by advancing policies and practices that create healthier, more equitable, and resilient communities. This webinar will explore the value of multisector organizations like ACHs and show how they can be developed to serve as civic assets that can be leveraged and adapted to address a range of issues, including historical structural barriers to achieving health equity. Roundtable co-chair Mary Pittman moderates presentations and discussion with leaders sharing work from Rhode Island, North Carolina, and California.

Racial and ethnic inequities in health and health care impact individual well-being, contribute to millions of premature deaths, and cost the United States hundreds of billions of dollars annually. Addressing these inequities is vital to improving the health of the nation’s most disadvantaged communities—and will also help to achieve optimal health for all. In 2003, the Institute of Medicine examined the impacts of health care disparities and proposed solutions in Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial Bias and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care. Because disparities persist, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened an expert committee to revisit the 2003 report. The committee’s report reviews the major drivers of health care disparities, provides insight into successful and unsuccessful interventions, identifies gaps in the evidence base, and makes recommendations to advance health equity.

In a public release webinar, members of the committee will provide an overview of the report's key messages and recommendations and answer audience questions.
